Gateway M675 Audio Jacks Do Not Auto-sense Under a Restricted User Account

Affected Products: Notebook Computers
Affected Operating Systems: Windows® XP

ISSUE: The difficulty only occurs when there are multiple user accounts configured on the Gateway M675 computer and at least one of the accounts is assigned Restricted User privileges. When you log onto the computer using the Restricted User account, the auto-sensing function of the audio jacks does not function. If headphones are connected to the audio output jack, either of the following may occur:

  1. The headphones are not detected and do not have sound. The internal speakers still have sound because the headphones were not detected.

  2. The headphones appear to be detected and have sound. However, the internal speakers have sound as well.

When headphones are connected, the speakers should be disabled and the sound should only be heard from the headphones.

Under the Restricted User account, you cannot make any changes to the audio jacks using the Sigmatel Universal Jack configuration utility installed because of restricted access. If the same account is changed to have a Power User or Administrator rights, the auto-sensing functions properly and when connecting headphones, the speakers are disabled.

RESOLUTION: Download and install the latest updates for the audio drivers and applications from the Gateway Web site.

Note: Do not replace or service the computer for this issue.
