AR-230 DVD Recorder May Lock Up with "Stopping" Message When Recording Through the 1394 Port with a DV Camcorder

Affected Products: Home Theater
Affected Operating Systems: Not OS Dependent

ISSUE: When you connect a DV camcorder to the AR-230 DVD Recorder through the 1394 port and try to record the video and audio from the DV camcorder, if you let the DV camcorder play and the AR-230 record the video and audio, when the DV camcorder comes to the end of the tape or there is no longer any audio or video, the AR-230 displays a “Stopping” message in the upper right corner of the screen and may lock up. The AR-230 may not respond to any type of command from the remote or the front panel of the AR-230. The only way to get control of the AR-230 is to unplug the power from the unit. The DVD media is unreadable and the video and audio may not be recorded to the DVD media properly. This can occur with any type of DV camcorder using the 1394 port, but there are some DV camcorders that do work properly and do not exhibit this issue. This may occur with the 1139 firmware and lower.

RESOLUTION: Download and install the Gateway AR-230 firmware 1163 or newer to resolve this issue. The filename on the Gateway Web site is 7514855.exe.

Installation

  1. Download and double-click the 7514855.exe file.

  2. The needed files are extracted to the C:\Cabs\7514855 folder.

  3. Browse to the C:\Cabs\7514855 folder. Using whatever method you have available, such as Nero CD-RW software, Roxio CD-RW software or Microsoft Windows XP integrated support, copy all the files in the 7514855 folder to a CD-R.

Program Use

To update the version of firmware on the Gateway DVD Recorder, follow these steps:

  1. Turn the DVD Recorder on.

  2. Use the Open/Close button to open the DVD Recorder's drive.

  3. Insert the DVD Recorder firmware update disc into the DVD Recorder.

  4. Close the DVD tray using the Open/Close button.

  5. When the on-screen menu appears, use the arrow buttons on the remote control to select Ok, and then press the Enter button on the remote control.

  6. Allow the CD to upgrade the unit. Do not turn off the system while upgrading.

  7. After the CD is ejected from the DVD Recorder, remove the Firmware Update CD.

  8. The update dialog box will disappear but the system does not show the complete dialog (only shows the logo instead) and the progress on the LED display may stay at 93 to 98%. If this happens, ensure that both the logo is displayed on the screen and that the progress on the LED is at 93 to 98%, and then unplug the power cord to the AR-230 unit. Plug the power cord back into the AR-230 unit.

  9. Power the DVD Recorder on.

  10. The firmware has been updated properly to 1163.
