Palm Pilot Serial Cradle May Cause the Computer to Restart Instead of Shut Down

Affected Products: Desktop Computers
Affected Operating Systems: Not OS Dependent

ISSUE: Serial Palm Pilot cradles can cause the computer to restart instead of shut down when they are attached to the serial port. The computer appears to shut off for a split second, and the power supply starts to spin down. However, the computer immediately powers up again. Cases of this have included the Palm III series and the Palm V series. Other Palm Pilots may also be affected. Gateway does not sell or support Palm Pilots.

RESOLUTION: Use the following steps to set the Wake on Modem Ring option in the BIOS Setup Utility to Stay Off.

  1. Shut down the computer.

  2. After the computer has been shut down, turn on the computer and begin pressing the F1 key in one-second intervals. If you perform this step correctly, the BIOS Setup Utility menu opens. If Windows loads normally, repeat this step.

  3. In the BIOS Setup Utility window, press the RIGHT ARROW key to select the Power tab.

  4. On the Power tab, press the DOWN ARROW key to select Wake on Modem Ring. Press the ENTER key.

  5. Select Stay Off, and then press ENTER.

  6. Press the F10 key, and then select Yes to save the changes and exit.
