Q: Platform or Model grayed out in Windows 7 Upgrade Kit list

When using the Windows 7 upgrade kit, your computer platform and model may be grayed out. The upgrade wizard has a notebook and a desktop radio button but only one is selectable. For example, if you have a desktop computer the desktop option may be grayed out and you can only select items on the notebook list.

A Win7 Upgrade Patch is available to reset the upgrade kit and allow you to select Desktop or notebook models. Follow these steps to install the patch:

1. Download the Win7 Upgrade patch.
2. Extract the Win7 Upgrade patch.
3. Insert the upgrade kit DVD in the optical drive and start the upgrade wizard. Continue through the upgrade wizard until it prompts for the model.
4. Run the Upgrade_Patch.exe file that you extracted in step 2.
5. In the Upgrade Wizard will be closed before installing patch dialog box, click OK.

   

6. In the Patch installed, Upgrade Wizard will be launched now dialog box, click OK.

   

7. All Desktop and Notebook models are now selectable.
