Q: How can I correct an "Out of Frequency" message that I received when I started Windows NT?

A: The refresh rate, screen size, or resolution is set too high. If changing these settings in Windows NT® does not correct the problem, adjust the registry settings for V-refresh, X-resolution, and Y-resolution.

  1. Start the computer in VGA mode.

  2. Log on as the administrator.

  3. From the Start menu, click Run.

  4. In the Run dialog box in the Open text box, type: regedit. Click OK.

  5. In the Registry Editor window, double-click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, System, CurrentControlSet, Hardware Profiles, Current, System, CurrentControlSet, Services, Name of video card drivers, and Device0.

  6. In the right pane, double-click DefaultSettings.VRefresh.

  7. In the Base section, click Decimal.

  8. Change the Value Data to 60. Click OK.

  9. Double-click DefaultSettings.XResolution.

  10. In the Base section, click Decimal.

  11. Change the Value Data to 640. Click OK.

  12. Double-click DefaultSettings.YResolution.

  13. In the Base section, click Decimal.

  14. Change the Value Data to 480. Click OK.

  15. In the Registry Editor window, double-click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, System, CurrentControlSet, Hardware Profiles, Current, System, CurrentControlSet, Services, Name of video card drivers, Device0.

  16. Repeat steps 3 through 11.

  17. In the Registry Editor window, double-click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\, System, CurrentControlSet, Services, Name of video card drivers, Device0.

  18. Double-click Monitor Refresh.

  19. In the Base section, click Decimal.

  20. Change the Value Data to 60. Click OK.

  21. Close the Registry Editor window.

  22. Restart the computer in normal mode.
