Novell NetWare 5.1 Installation for 960/980 Series Servers

Note: Gateway has not tested this operating system on this particular platform but has verified basic functionality in a lab environment. This information is provided as a courtesy only to those Gateway customers who choose to use these server operating systems. These instructions do not in anyway imply that Gateway fully supports this operating system.

Configuration Notes: These instructions assume that the server is using a RAID controller, the integrated Adaptec SCSI controllers, the integrated video card, and the integrated 1Gb Ethernet controller. They also assume that the CD-ROM drive is attached to either the primary or secondary integrated IDE controller.

Note: Do not have the RAID controller installed in PCI slot 2 or 3.

Prerequisites

  1. NetWare 5.1 Installation CD media, including licensing information.

  2. Intel® Integrated Gb NIC drivers (82544CG). These drivers can be obtained from http://support.intel.com.

  3. Pentium® 4 processor for NetWare 5.x patch. The file name is 4pent.exe. This file can be extracted to a floppy disk. The two needed files are SYMCJIT.NLM and SYMCJIT.IPS. Additional information and the patch can be obtained from http://support.novell.com/servlet/tidfinder/2958220.

  4. Adaptec 7902W Ultra 320 drivers available from http://www.adaptec.com.

  5. Download the appropriate driver for your raid controller from the vendors website.

    Suggested Options

    1. Server Add–on Disk or Network Controller drivers. For any products added to the system.

    2. The latest updated Support Pack from the Novell Web site.

    Steps

    1. Insert the Novell Installation CD into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer. The computer starts from the CD-ROM and begins preparing the hard drive for NetWare Installation.

    2. If the installation program detects an existing startup partition on the hard drive, it gives the option of using this partition or creating a new one. For new servers, select Create a New Boot Partition, and then press the ENTER key.

    3. The next screen prompts you to specify the size of the boot partition to create. The default option is 100 megabytes (MB), or desired capacity. To accept this size, select Continue, and then press ENTER.

    4. On the next screen, to confirm that you want to create a new partition, select Continue, and then press ENTER. The install program restarts the server and formats the partition created.

    5. The Novell NetWare logo screen momentarily appears as the installation program loads.

    6. At this point press ALT+F10 to exit. When prompted, respond Yes, which brings you to the console prompt. To go to an MS-DOS prompt, type: Down.

    7. Insert the Pentium 4 CPU patch disk created in prerequisite step 3 into the floppy disk drive. At the prompt type: MD C:\NWUPDATE. Press ENTER. Type: COPY A:\4PENT\SYM*.* C:\NWUPDATE. Press ENTER. This copies the two required update files. Restart the server.

    8. The install program detects the existing startup partition. Select Use the existing partition, and then Continue.

    9. On the Welcome to NetWare Server installation screen, to begin installation on a new server, select Continue, and then press ENTER.

    10. On the Select the Settings for the Server screen, to accept the default settings, select Continue, and then press ENTER.

    11. On the Select the Regional Settings for the Server screen, to accept the default United States regional settings, select Continue, and then press ENTER.

    12. On the next screen, to accept the default mouse and video settings, select Continue, and then press ENTER.

      Note: NetWare also works with a serial mouse. However, a mouse is not required. Accept the default setting of Super VGA unless the video card being used cannot support 256 colors.

    13. Files copy.

    14. NetWare detects the hardware installed in the server. If multiple drivers exist for a particular device, the computer prompts you to select one.

    15. At this point, the drivers for all installed mass storage controllers are displayed, along with the platform support module for the server. The default option, MPS14, works with the entire Gateway server line. Select Modify, and then press ENTER.

    16. Select the Storage Adapters field with the two adaptec and IDEATA drivers, and then press ENTER.

    17. Press the DELETE key to remove both the ADPT160M driver instances. Note: Do not remove the IDEATA.HAM driver.

    18. Press the INSERT key and a list of available drivers appears. Press INSERT again to add an unlisted driver.

    19. By default, the install program searchs drive A for the drivers to install. Insert the adaptec U320 controller disk that was created in prerequisite step 4 into the floppy disk drive, and then press ENTER. Depending on how the drivers are configured, it may install both instances immediately and list them under drivers, or it may also require that you select the U320 drivers manually from a list.

    20. The installation returns to the Add, Edit or Delete Storage Drivers screen with both the IDEATA.HAM and two SCSI.HAM drivers. Press the INSERT key again and the same list of available drivers is displayed.

    21. Press the INSERT key again. By default, the install program searches drive A for the drivers to install. Insert the RAID controller drivers disk created in prerequisite step 5, and then press ENTER.

    22. At this point, depending on how the drivers are configured, it may install the drivers when it detects the card immediately, list them under drivers, or it may also require that you select the drivers manually from a list.

    23. The installation returns to the Add, Edit or Delete Storage Drivers screen with the IDEATA, 2 X SCSI and now RAID drivers listed. Press the TAB key to select Return to Driver Summary.

    24. On the Platform/Storage screen, press the TAB key to select Continue, and then press ENTER.

    25. NetWare installation loads the selected drivers.

    26. The drivers are matched up to the corresponding hardware.

    27. NetWare installation displays the detected storage devices and network interface cards. The installation detects most hardware. Select Modify, and then press ENTER.

    28. Select the Network Boards field.

    29. On the Drivers Listing screen, press the INSERT key to display a list of available drivers. Press INSERT again to install an unlisted driver.

    30. By default, it indicates that it is going to search drive A. Insert the floppy disk created in prerequisite step 2, and then press ENTER. NetWare begins searching the disk.

    31. Drivers are identified as CE1000.LAN Intel(r) 8254X Based Netware Connection. Press ENTER.

    32. NetWare installation displays the configurable parameters with the SLOT address already specified. From the menu, select the Return to Driver List option.

    33. From the menu, select the Return to Driver Summary option. This brings you back to the list of the Storage and Network drivers. Select Continue.

    34. Drivers are loaded for the detected hardware.

    35. System information is saved.

    36. NetWare installation searches for available hard drives.

    37. The Novell Storage System (NSS) is loaded onto the hard drives.

    38. The detected hard drive space and how to use it is displayed. To accept the default options, select Continue, and then press ENTER.

    39. The SYS volume is mounted.

    40. The CD-ROM driver is loaded.

    41. The CD-ROM is mounted.

    42. Files copy to the SYS volume.

    43. NetWare installation changes to the graphical interface and loads the installation wizard.

    44. The file system is initialized.

    45. In the Server Properties dialog box, type the name of the server, and then click Next.

      Note: The server name should be different from the name you plan to use for the NDS tree and must be unique from all other servers on the NDS tree. The name can be between 2 and 47 alphanumeric characters and can contain underscores and dashes, but no spaces. The first character cannot be a period.

    46. In the Protocols dialog box, select each network interface card. To activate the TCP/IP protocol for this card, select the IP check box, and then type the IP address information into the fields. To enable IPX protocol, select the IPX check box. When complete, click Next.

    47. NetWare installation connects to the network and checks for duplicate server names.

    48. In the Domain Name Service dialog box, if the network contains a domain name server, type the required information provided by your network administrator. If there is no domain name server, leave this information blank. When complete, click Next.

      Note: If you click Next without typing the information, a Warning dialog box opens. Click OK to confirm.

    49. In the Time Zone dialog box, select the correct time zone, and then click Next.

    50. In the NDS Install dialog box, if this is the first server on the network or to create a new Novell Directory Services (NDS) tree, select New NDS Tree. To add this server to an existing tree, select Existing NDS Tree. Click Next.

    51. In the next dialog box, type the NDS tree information provided by your network administrator. Click Next.

    52. NDS is installed on the server.

    53. The NDS Summary dialog box opens, displaying the NDS information for this server. Click Next.

    54. Insert the disk containing the license into the floppy disk drive. In the Licenses dialog box, type the path to the license file on the disk. Select the file name for the license, and then click Next.

    55. In the Installation Options dialog box, select Install standard NetWare Products or, if necessary, one of the other options, and then click Next.

    56. In the Novell Certificate Server 2.0 Objects dialog box, you can set up this server as a Certificate Authority for the organization. Click Next.

    57. If the server is set up as a certificate authority, a warning dialog box opens. Click OK.

    58. In the NetWare Enterprise Web Server Settings dialog box, to accept the standard port settings for Web servers, click Next.

    59. In the NetWare Web Manager Settings dialog box, type the NetWare Web Manager port number, and then click Next.

      Note: This port number is necessary to access the server over the Internet for administrative purposes. Change the number regularly for security purposes.

    60. In the Summary dialog box, click Finish.

    61. Files copy. This process takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

    62. In the Installation complete dialog box, after removing all CDs and floppy disks from the drives, to restart the computer, click OK.

    63. At this point, the server installation is completed. It is strongly suggested that the latest support pack update from Novell for this operating system be installed at this time.
