Q: Do regular PCI cards work in PCI-X card slots?

A: Yes. A regular PCI card can work in a PCI-X slot as long as the PCI card is a 3.3v or universal card, as PCI-X only supports 3.3v cards. If you add a regular PCI card to a PCI-X slot, the highest possible speed that the card runs at is 66 MHz, due to the limitation of the PCI 2.2 specification. Thus, if you install a PCI-X and a normal PCI card into slots on the same bus, both cards only run at 66 MHz. It is suggested that you do not place PCI and PCI-X cards on the same bus, because the bus runs at the speed of the slowest card.

Note: "Regular" PCI cards are also known as PCI Conventional cards.
