Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What rules should I follow for proper PCI card placement in the 995 server?

A: To obtain the best performance from your 995 server it is best to install only one PCI card per bus. With only one PCI card installed per bus, the card has the opportunity to run at a frequency of 133-MHz and does not have to contend with any other cards for IRQ assignments or for possession of the data bus. If both PCI slots are populated on a single bus the maximum speed that the bus will function at is 100-MHz.

Additional Notes:

If you are installing a PCI video card into the 995 server, it is best to install the card into one of the 32bit/33MHz slots. It is also suggested that if you are having difficulties with a particular card being installed in the server that you place it in one of the 64-bit non hot-plug slots.

Devices such as Raid Controllers and NICs should be installed in the hot-plug PCI slots, since the bus controller for the hot-plug slots is dedicated to just the four PCI slots and no other devices, making these slots more efficient.
