Frequently Asked Questions Q: Can I mix memory in this server?A: This server requires memory to be added in identical pairs. DIMMs within a pair must be identical and populated by bank. This motherboard has three banks of two module slots. DIMM1A:DIMM1B, DIMM2A:DIMM2B, and DIMM3A:DIMM3B. As long as the memory is identical within banks (and within system specifications), there should not be any functional issues. In general, it is not suggested that different vendor's memory be combined in servers. Subtle differences in tolerances combining modules within specifications can cause anomalous behavior in some combinations of different modules from different vendors. Gateway tests all server memory sold with this server to ensure proper operation. Gateway cannot guarantee that mixing different vendors memory will function with consistent results. However, there is not a reason to believe that it will not function correctly in most cases.
It is not suggested that same vendor modules with slightly different model numbers be included in the same bank. For example, many high capacity modules use double stacked DRAM technology due to space limitations. At a later date, the same vendor may develop a same capacity DIMM that does not require double stacked memory to meet the same system specifications. It is likely that although both DIMMS would meet the same system specification, they would not function together in a banked configuration.
