Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I combine both of my server's backplanes into a single logical unit (bus)?

A: In most cases, this is not possible. The server backplanes do not have a connector to allow you to connect or bridge the two backplanes together. However, you can connect both backplanes to a dual channel RAID/SCSI controller to allow you to combine the drives on either backplane into a single array.

There are a couple of exceptions to this on some legacy Gateway servers. On some 8000, 8200, and 9000 series servers, at the point of sale, the system could have been sold with dual 3-bay cages (in addition to the standard 6-bay cages). These could be combined for a total of six bays on a single bus. It is not possible to combine the 8400 or the 980 series servers cages into a single SCSI bus.
