Q: How can I tell what firmware revision my hard disk is currently using?

A: The original firmware revision may be printed on the label of the hard disk. However, it may have been flashed to a later revision since it was manufactured. To check the current firmware revision of the hard disk, perform one of the following sets of steps based on the type of controller to which the disk is attached:

Adaptec SCSI Controller

  1. During POST, press CTRL-A when prompted to enter the Adaptec SCSI BIOS Utility.
  2. If there are multiple channels, select the channel to which the hard disk is attached, and press Enter.
  3. Select SCSI Disk Utilities, then press Enter
  4. Locate the hard disk in the list, and read the description of the disk to determine the firmware revision.

LSI Logic SymBIOS SCSI Controller

  1. During POST, press CTRL-C when prompted to enter the SymBIOS SCSI BIOS Utility.
  2. If there are multiple channels, select the channel to which the hard disk is attached, and press Enter.
  3. Select SCSI Device Configuration, then press Enter.
  4. Locate the hard disk in the list, and read the description of the disk to determine the firmware revision.

LSI Logic SATA, MegaRAID or AMI MegaRAID RAID Controller

  1. During POST, press CTRL-M when prompted to enter the MegaRAID Setup Utility.
  2. Select Objects, then press Enter.
  3. Select Physical Drives, then press Enter.
  4. Locate the hard disk in the list, and press F2 to display properties for the disk.

If you have an IDE hard disk, you will need to check the System BIOS Setup Utility to determine the firmware revision of the hard disk.

System BIOS Setup Utility

  1. Press F2 to enter the System BIOS Setup Utility.
  2. Select Boot, and then press Enter.
  3. Select Hard Disks, and then press Enter.
  4. Locate the hard disk in the list, and read the description of the disk to determine the firmware revision.
