Frequently Asked Questions Q: What are the Pentium Pro and Pentium II Processor features?A:
The Pentium Pro® processor features three-way superscalar microarchitecture, 14-stage superpipeline, five parallel execution units (two integer, one load, one store, and one FPU), dual 8-KB (8 data and 8 instructions) L1 cache, 256-KB or 512-KB on-chip L2 cache, out-of-order execution, dynamic branch prediction, and speculative execution. The Pentium Pro® accesses the L2 cache using a dedicated 64-bit "backside" bus which runs at full synchronous bus speed without contention with other I/O operations. The backside bus is completely separate from the "frontside" bus, which accesses slower main memory and peripherals, so the L2 cache can be accessed independently, at full speed, without ever having to wait for slower devices. Pentium Pro‚ and Pentium II processor upgrade kits ordered from ALR include all the hardware/components necessary for installation.
The Pentium II processor is the flagship of a new generation of Intel microprocessors which combines the power of the Pentium Pro® processor with the capabilities of MMXTM technology. Available in 233MHz, 266MHz, and 300MHz, the Pentium II takes advantage of the same Dual Independent Bus architecture used in the Pentium Pro for high bandwidth and performance. The Pentium II also features dual 16-KB (16 data and 16 instructions) non-blocking L1 cache, and a 512-KB non-blocking L2 cache.
Pentium Pro® and Pentium II processors use a Voltage Regulator Module (VRM) to automatically adjust and regulate the voltages received by the chip. Each processor must have its own VRM. The VRMs used in the Gateway ALR 8200 are fully compliant with the Intel VRM. Every Pentium Pro® or Pentium II processor upgrade kit ordered from ALR includes the VRM.
