Before the Installation

Before you begin installing Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Server on the 995 server, obtain all of the appropriate drivers from either the Gateway Web site or from the Server Companion CD (SCCD) provided with your server. Copy the drivers to a floppy disk. The drivers needed are for the Adaptec U320 (AIC-7902) SCSI Controller and for the Intel Gigabit network card (82544GC).

Operating System Installation

Installing all versions of the Windows 2000 Server operating system involves two portions; text and the graphical user interface (GUI). Each portion of the installation procedure is outlined below.

Text Portion

  1. Start (or restart) the server. Place the Windows 2000 Server or Advanced Server CD in the CD-ROM drive.

  2. When prompted with the message, "Press any key to boot from CD...", press any key.

  3. At the first blue screen that displays Windows 2000 Setup at the top and Press F6 to load addition devices at the bottom, Press the F6 key.

  4. The next screen prompts with the options to Press S to Specify additional drivers or Press Enter to continue. Press the S key.

  5. Insert the floppy disk that contains the AIC-7902 SCSI Controller driver, and then press the ENTER key.

  6. On the next screen, select Adaptec Ultra 320 SCSI Cards (Win2000) Driver, and then press ENTER.

  7. On the next screen, the message "Setup will load support for the following", with (Adaptec Ultra 320 SCSI Cards (Win2000) Driver) displayed. Press ENTER to continue with the installation.

    Note: Repeat steps four through seven if you need to load support for a RAID controller.

  8. Press ENTER to continue with the Windows installation.

  9. On the User License screen, press the F8 key to accept the license.

  10. The next screen displays the hard disk drives that were detected and the partitions on those drives (if any exist). If no partition exists, press the C key to create a partition, enter the partition size, and then Press ENTER to accept that size.

  11. Select the partition on which to install Windows 2000, and then press ENTER.

  12. The next screen prompts for the file system type desired to format the partition. The two options are NTFS or FAT. Choose the file format desired, and then press ENTER.

  13. The rest of the installation procedure does not require user intervention. After all tasks have completed, the server restarts.

GUI Portion

  1. After restarting, the GUI portion of the installation begins. In the Welcome to the Windows 2000 Setup Wizard, click Next.

  2. The next window is just informational. It displays that Windows is installing devices.

  3. If necessary, make changes to the regional and language settings, and then click Next.

  4. Type your name and the name of the organization, if applicable, and then click Next.

  5. In the Your Product Key dialog box, type the Product Key, and then click Next.

  6. In the Licensing Modes dialog box, select the mode you want to use, and then click Next.

  7. If necessary, change the name of the computer. Type an administrator password, and then confirm it. Click Next.

  8. In the Windows 2000 Components dialog box, select the check box to add components, or click to clear the check box to remove components, and then click Next.

  9. If necessary, make changes to the date and time settings, and then click Next.

  10. Files copy.

  11. In the Network settings dialog box, click Typical settings, and then click Next.

  12. On the Workgroup or Computer Domain screen, select the desired option, and then click Next.

  13. Components are installed.

  14. Start menu items are installed.

  15. In the Completing the Windows 2000 Setup Wizard dialog box, remove the CD from the CD-ROM drive, and then click Finish.

  16. Upon restart, the Windows 2000 Server splash screen appears.

  17. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to begin.

  18. In the Log On to Windows dialog box, type your password, and then click OK.

  19. Windows 2000 Server Setup is complete. The Network Wizard opens. Choose to configure the network later, and then click Next. Install the network after the drivers are loaded.
