Part number 3501277,3501327,3501415,3501417,3501427,3501428,3501660,3501662,3501726,4000791

Note: Gateway has not tested this operating system on this particular platform but has verified basic functionality in a lab environment. This information is provided as a courtesy only to those Gateway customers who choose to use these server operating systems. These instructions do not in any way imply that Gateway fully supports this operating system.

Note: The integrated network interface card (NIC) on the 960 and 980 motherboard is NOT supported by OpenServer as of the writing of this document. You need to install a supported NIC for network access.

Configuration Notes: These instructions assume that the server uses the integrated Secondary IDE controller for the CD-ROM drive, the integrated ATI video card, and an add-on Network Card (See previous note). The first set of installation steps assumes that the LSI Elite 1600 493 2-channel RAID controller is installed. The succeeding steps are used when the RAID controller is not installed.

Prerequisites

  • SCO Unix Openserver 5.0.6 installation media CD-ROM.
  • License Number and License Code.
  • RS506a support pack for 5.0.6 and oss648a processor supplement downloaded from the SCO support Web site.
  • LSI Elite 1600 RAID controller drivers from www.lsilogic.com, file name Sco_Unix_214.zip.

Installation With LSI Elite 1600 RAID Controller Installed

  1. Start the server to the SCO Unix Openserver Installation CD.

  2. At the Boot: prompt, type: Link. Press the ENTER key.

  3. When prompted for the name of the modules you want to link, type: amird. Press ENTER.

  4. When prompted to insert the disk containing the amird module, insert the disk containing the driver downloaded from LSILogic.com. Press ENTER.

  5. When prompted to begin the installation, press ENTER.

  6. When prompted to insert the amird disk again, verify that it is still in the drive, and then press ENTER.

  7. Read and accept the End User License Agreement (EULA).

  8. You are prompted to select the install medium. In most cases, this is the secondary master IDE CD-ROM drive. Select Continue, and then press ENTER.

  9. Select the Keyboard type as US English. Select Continue, and then press ENTER.

  10. When prompted, type the License Number and License Code. Select Continue, and then press ENTER.

  11. Select the type of installation to perform: fresh or upgrade.

Note: If you select a fresh install, you are prompted to confirm your choice.

  12. Choose the following:

    • System Name
    • Domain Name
    • Security Profile
    • Time Zone
    • Language

  13. Select the additional software to install. When complete, select Continue, and then press ENTER.

  14. Select hard drive setup. In almost all cases, we recommend selecting a Unix Only drive. At this point, you can also install the additional software options selected previously. When complete, select Continue, and then press ENTER.

  15. The next screen is the final setup choice before the automated portion of the installation. It starts with Network Card auto detection.

Note: The NIC integrated on the motherboard of the 960 or 980 server is not supported by SCO Unix Openserver 5.0.6 and is not auto-detected. If a supported NIC is in the computer, configure the network settings. If no supported NIC is installed, one can be configured later, but network access is not available until a supported NIC is installed.

  16. On the same screen that contains the network configuration, select the type of mouse to be used. A High Resolution Keyboard Mouse is the option for a PS/2 mouse installed on the computer. Select the type of e-mail system to be used by the server, MMDF or SendMAIL. If in doubt, choose the default option of MMDF. When complete, select Continue, and then press ENTER.

  17. The automated portion of the installation starts. The drive is partitioned and formatted, and then SCO Unix Openserver is installed.

  18. Patch the server.

Installation Without LSI RAID Controller Installed

  1. Start the server to the SCO Unix Openserver Installation CD.

Patching the Server

Important: While there are many patches for SCO Unix Openserver available, there are two that are mandatory on any system that is running a Pentium® 4 processor:

  • RS506a the support pack for 5.0.6
  • oss648a the processor support pack

The file names are rs506a.tar and oss648a. Download these files to separate folders on the server (in this example, /adir and /bdir, respectively).

RS506A Support Patch Installation

  1. Log on to the server as root.

  2. Un-tar the file from the /adir folder with the command tar xvf rs506a.tar. This expands the file to VOL.000.000 - VOL.000.039.

  3. Run scoadmin software.

  4. Press the S key for software and press the I key for Install New.

  5. Select From , where the host name is the local computer.

  6. When prompted for the media device, press the DOWN ARROW key to see a list of media devices. Select Media Image.

  7. When prompted for a path to the media images, type the path where the files were extracted (for example, /adir).

  8. The software that can be installed is listed. Select only RS506A: Software Manager Supplement INSTALL THIS FIRST. Install this option.

  9. You are warned that you need to restart the software manager. To accept this message, press ENTER.

  10. Exit, and then re-enter the software manager.

  11. Perform steps 4 through 7 again.

  12. From the software list, select RS506A: Release for SCO Unix Openserver Release 5.0.6 (ver rs506a). Install this option.

  13. Before the installation is complete, a message states that the kernel has been re-linked and the server must be restarted. To acknowledge the message, press ENTER.

  14. When installation is complete, close the software manager, and then restart the server using the shutdown command.

OSS648A Patch Installation

  1. Log on to the server as root.

  2. Rename the file in /bdir using the command mv /bdir/oss648a /bdir/VOL.000.000.

  3. Run scoadmin software.

  4. Press the S key for software and press the I key for Install New.

  5. Select From , where the host name is the local computer.

  6. When prompted for the media device, press the DOWN ARROW key to see a list of media devices. Select Media Image.

  7. When prompted for a path to the media images, type the path to the file location, (for example, /bdir).

  8. Install the OSS648A: Processor Supplement for Openserver 5.0.6 package.

  9. Before the installation is complete, a message states that the kernel has been re-linked and the server must be restarted. To acknowledge the message, press ENTER.
