Q: What is a BMC?

A: The Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) is a device that is used to monitor the computer for critical events by communicating with various sensors on the motherboard. The BMC is independent of the processor and is dedicated to computer management tasks. The BMC also logs events to the System Event Log (SEL) when parameters exceed their defined thresholds. The BMC is always running when power is applied to the computer. To use the BMC features, you must install the Gateway Server Manager software. When out-of-band management is enabled, the server can be reset, powered on, or powered down remotely.
