Q: How do I update the BIOS and firmware on the 995 Server?

A: Updating the 995 FRU/SDR

  1. Download the new FRU/SDR update from www.gateway.com.

  2. Extract the downloaded file to the root of a floppy disk. All files should reside at the root and not in any directories on the floppy disk.

  3. Turn on the computer with the Server Companion CD placed in the CD-ROM drive. On the option screen, use the DOWN ARROW key to select Boot from CD-ROM, and then press ENTER.

  4. The Gateway Utilities Main Menu opens. Press the X key to Exit to a Command Prompt.

  5. Insert the floppy disk that has the FRU/SDR update files (created in step two) into the floppy disk drive.

  6. At the command prompt, type b:, and then press the ENTER key.

  7. At the B: command prompt, type update, and then press ENTER to begin the FRU/SDR update utility.

  8. The next screen displays “Updating the FRU and Sensor Data Records” and “SRSH4 Chassis Detected.” A list of four options is displayed. Press the 1 key to select “Update FRU’s and the SDR Repository.”

  9. The message “Probing Hardware, Please Wait” is displayed. When completed, a message displays the processors that are detected and if the hot-swap controller (HSC) was detected.

  10. The next screen prompts “Is the Left power supply present? [Y/N].” If both power supply number one and AC cord number one are connected, press the Y key.

  11. The next screen prompts “Is power supply PSSHARE is present? [Y/N].” If there are three power supplies in the server, press Y.

  12. The next screen prompts “Is the Center power supply present? [Y/N].” If there are three power supplies in the server, press Y.

  13. The next screen prompts “Is the Right power supply present? [Y/N].” If both power supply number two and AC cord number two are connected, press Y.

  14. The FRU and SDR Repositories are updated. The message “Programming complete, reboot server for normal operation” is displayed.

  15. Restart the server and prepare to update the BMC.

Updating the 995 BMC

  1. Download the new BMC update from www.gateway.com.

  2. Extract the downloaded file to the root of a floppy disk. All files should reside at the root and not in any directories on the floppy disk.

  3. Turn on the computer with the Server Companion CD placed in the CD-ROM drive. On the option screen, use the DOWN ARROW key to select Boot from CD-ROM, and then press the ENTER key.

  4. The Gateway Utilities Main Menu opens. Press the X key to Exit to a Command Prompt.

  5. Insert the floppy disk that has the BMC update files into the floppy disk drive.

  6. At the command prompt, type b:, and then press ENTER.

  7. At the B: command prompt, type autoexec and press ENTER to begin the BMC flash utility.

  8. The BMC is updated. When complete, the message “Firmware Update has completed!” is displayed.

  9. Turn the server off and unplug the two power cords in the back. Press and hold the power button for five seconds to discharge all electrical current from the server.

  10. When all of the previous steps are completed, connect the power cords, and then power on the server normally.

Updating the 995 Server BIOS

Note: Before attempting to update the system BIOS, enter the BIOS SETUP utility by pressing the F2 key during POST. Document all settings so you can correctly re-enter all of your previous settings. This enables the server to function as it did before the BIOS and firmware updates.

  1. Download the new BIOS update from www.gateway.com.

  2. Extract the downloaded file to the root of a floppy disk. All files should reside at the root and not in any directories on the floppy disk.

  3. Turn on the computer with the Server Companion CD place in the CD-ROM drive. On the option screen, use the DOWN ARROW key to select Boot from CD-ROM, and then press the ENTER key.

  4. The Gateway Utilities Main Menu opens. Press the X key to Exit to a Command Prompt.

  5. Insert the floppy disk that has the BIOS update files into the floppy disk drive.

  6. At the command prompt, type b:, and then press the ENTER key.

  7. At the B: command prompt, type autoexec, and then press ENTER to begin the BIOS flash utility.

  8. The next screen has two options. At the command prompt, type 1, and then press ENTER.

  9. The BIOS update process begins. The warning “Do not power off the system at this time” displays.

  10. When the update has completed, the server automatically begins the restart process. Remove the Server Companion CD and the floppy disk from their respective drives.

  11. Upon restarting, press the F2 key to enter the BIOS Setup utility. Re-enter all of the settings that were previously recorded. After all settings have been re-entered and saved, restart the server and prepare to update the FRU/SDR.
