Configuration notes: This step-by-step procedure has been created using the most common configuration of the 960/980 Server. It is intended to be used for a fresh installation of Windows 2000 Server. Depending on the configuration of your server, it is possible that some required installation steps are not contained in this document.

Preparing the Drivers

In order for Windows 2000 Server to install properly, additional mass storage drivers for the RAID controller are needed.

Perform the following steps to create a driver disk for the AMI 493 (Elite 1600) Raid controller from either the Gateway Server Companion CD 4.x or by downloading the latest drivers. As of the writing of this document, the latest AMI 493 (Elite 1600) Raid controller drivers were version 5.16.

  • Using the Server Companion CD 4.x:

    1. Place the Gateway Server Companion CD in the CD-ROM drive, and then allow the CD to automatically run.

Note: If the CD does not automatically run, open My Computer, right-click the CD-ROM drive letter, and then click Autoplay.

    2. In the Gateway Application and Driver Recovery dialog box, under Driver and Utility Search, select Search by Criteria, and then click Search.

    3. In the search results dialog box, from the list, select AMI 493 RAID Controller, and then click Extract.

    4. In the self-extracting wizard dialog box, click Next.

    5. Insert a blank formatted floppy disk into the floppy disk drive.

    6. In the Destination Directory box, type: A:\. Click Next.

    7. The files are extracted to the floppy disk.

    8. Label the disk AMI 493 (Elite 1600) Raid controller drivers.

  • Using the drivers from download:

    1. On the Gateway.com Download Center page, locate the 7511573.exe file. As of the writing of this document, the path is: http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?fn=7511573.exe.

    2. After the file is located, click Download Now.

    3. In the File Download dialog box, click Open.

    4. The files extract to the C:\drivers\7511573 folder.

    5. Insert a blank formatted floppy disk into the floppy disk drive.

    6. Open the C:\drivers\7511573 folder, and then copy all the files to the root of the floppy disk.

Installing Windows 2000 Server

  1. Start the server with the Windows 2000 CD in the CD-ROM drive. When prompted to start from the CD, press any key.

Note: Steps 2 through 7 are only required if you have the AMI 493 Raid controller. If you do not have this controller, skip to step 8.

  2. When the Windows 2000 Setup message "Press the F6 key to install 3rd party SCSI or RAID drivers" appears, press the F6 key.

Note: If you miss this prompt, restart the computer and press F6 when the message appears.

  3. On the next screen, press the S key to install additional mass storage drivers.

  4. Insert the disk containing the AMI 493 RAID controller drivers into the floppy disk drive, and then press the ENTER key.

  5. On the next screen, from the list, select Elite 1600, and then press ENTER.

  6. On the next screen, to continue setup, press ENTER.

  7. Files copy.

  8. On the Welcome to Setup screen, to set up Windows 2000 now, press ENTER.

  9. After reading the License Agreement, to agree to the terms and continue, press the F8 key.

  10. The next screen addresses the partition on which to install Windows 2000. If there is no partition, press the C key to create one, and then skip to step 14. If there is already a partition and you want to delete it and configure a new one, continue with step 11.

  11. Select the partition to delete, and then press the D key.

  12. Windows warns that you are about to remove a system partition. Press ENTER.

  13. You are warned again that you are about to delete the partition. To confirm the removal of the partition, press the L key.

  14. On the next screen, to create a partition on the unpartitioned space, press C.

  15. Either accept the default partition size, or press the BACKSPACE key to erase the value, and then type the partition size that you want to use. Press ENTER.

  16. Repeat steps 14 and 15 if you need to create more partitions.

Note: Partition sizes are determined in megabytes (MB). For example, 1,024 MB = 1 gigabyte (GB).

  17. Select the partition on which to install Windows 2000, and then press ENTER.

  18. Select the file format, FAT32 or NTFS file system, with which to format the partition. Press ENTER.

Note: NTFS file system is recommended for Windows 2000 Server.

  19. A progress bar monitors the hard drive format process.

  20. After format is complete, the hard drive is checked.

  21. Files copy.

  22. The Windows 2000 configuration is initialized.

  23. This portion of Setup is finished. Remove all media from the drives, and then to restart the computer, press ENTER.

Note: If the Windows 2000 Server CD is left in the CD-ROM drive, during the restart, you are prompted to press any key to start from CD. Do not start to the CD as this starts the setup process over again.

  24. Windows starts.

  25. In the Welcome to Windows 2000 Setup Wizard dialog box, to continue setup, wait approximately five seconds or click Next.

  26. Setup detects and installs devices on the computer. This may take several minutes.

Note: At this time, a dialog box may open stating that a device driver is not digitally signed by Microsoft. If this dialog box opens, click Yes.

  27. In the Regional Settings dialog box, customize any desired settings, and then click Next.

  28. In the Personalize Your Software dialog box, type the appropriate name and organization information, and then click Next.

  29. In the Your Product Key dialog box, type the Product Key found on the Certificate of Authority (COA) sticker located on the removable side panel of the Gateway 960/980 server, and then click Next.

  30. In the next dialog box, select the licensing mode you want to use. If additional Client Access Licenses were purchased, add the appropriate number of additional licenses when choosing Per Server mode.

  31. In the Computer Name and Administrator Password dialog box, type the appropriate information, and then click Next.

Note: The computer name must be unique on the network. It is helpful to use a computer name that is descriptive as well as unique.

  32. The next dialog box lists the default Windows 2000 components to be installed. Make any appropriate changes to the list, and then click Next.

  33. In the Date and Time Settings dialog box, after making the appropriate changes, click Next.

  42. If a System Settings Changed dialog box opens and prompts you to restart the computer, click Yes.

  43. After restarting and logging on, close the Configure Your Server dialog box, and then install drivers.

Installing Drivers

After installing the operating system, you are required to install any drivers that were not installed by Windows 2000 Server Setup. For a commonly configured Gateway 960/980 Server, this includes the network interface controller (NIC) drivers and the 960/980 server chipset drivers. Additional components such as tape backup drives, SCSI controllers, and modems may also require drivers.

  1. Place the Gateway Server Companion CD (SCCD) in the CD-ROM drive, and allow it to automatically run.

Note: If the CD does not automatically run, open My Computer, right-click the CD-ROM drive letter, and then click Autoplay.

  2. In the Gateway Application and Driver Recovery dialog box, in the Driver and Utility Search section, click Search.

  3. From the Installable Items list, select Automatic Install.

  4. In the list, select the check boxes for items that show Not installed under the Status column, and then click Begin Automated Install.

  5. In the Automatic Install dialog box, click OK.

  6. Files copy, and then the updates and applications listed are installed. When the process finishes, click OK.

Concluding Statements

After installing the NIC drivers, you are able to configure networking. Due to the various configurations and applications of Windows 2000 Server in a network environment, no additional steps are included for this process. By default, Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing, and TCP\IP are already installed. Also by default, TCP\IP is configured to obtain an IP address automatically. Refer to the Configure Your Server wizard and Windows Help for solutions to common questions regarding the network setup.

After installation is complete, and you use the Dcpromo.exe tool, you may receive the error message:
"Active Directory installation failed: The network location could not be reached."
To resolve this error, ensure that the server's network adapter is firmly connected to a hub or a switch with a network cable.
