Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I figure out which device the system fault LED is referring to on the 8450R server?

A:

The 8450R server has a great number of components that are monitored by the Baseboard Management Controller (BMC). The BMC checks what are termed as Field Replaceable Unit Sensor Data Records (FRU/SDR) to find out which devices it needs to monitor and what the tolerances are to be for each device. If it detects an error, it initiates an alert and illuminates one of the fault light-emitting diodes (LED). Depending on what actions are defined, it performs any number of tasks. Normally, it notifies an e-mail address or opens an alert dialog box on the console. The two most common things that are asked about these LEDs are:

  • There is nothing apparently wrong with the server. How do I tell which component is causing the LED to illuminate?

The answer is to load Intel Server Control. Intel Server Control identifies which component is specifically in an erred state.

  • After updating the System BIOS, firmwares for the BMC, and FRU/SDRs, the Fan Fault LED is blinking. It does not seem like there are any fan failures of any kind. What is going on?

This often indicates that an incorrect option was chosen during the update of the FRU/SDRs. Make certain that the correct number of fans are identified when running this update. If the number was chosen incorrectly on the initial update, run the update again choosing the correct configuration.
