Q: How do I replace the 8400-series server baseboard?

A:
  1. Power down the server.
  2. Remove the power cord and all cables (mouse, keyboard, NIC, etc…).
  3. Put on a ground strap to avoid ESD, which may cause damages to the internal components within unit.
  4. Remove the top cover by turning the wing-nut on rear of unit counter-clockwise, then sliding the cover backward.

  5. Remove the two mounting screws which hold down the front top cover. Slide this panel backward to remove.

    Note: Screws are captive so they will stay with the cover.

  6. Remove the mounting screw which holds down the memory bracket. Swing the bracket backward, and then lift it out from unit. This bracket slides into slot in chassis at rear.

  7. Lift up the E-Pak Foam from unit.

  8. From front of the unit, grab the grill and pull it toward your body, the fan assembly will swing out.

  9. This is how the fan assembly will look after swinging it forward.

  10. Pull the memory board straight up.

  11. Remove all add on cards (Raid, modem, etc..), and then remove the PCI slot dividers.

  12. Using a screwdriver, remove all mounting screws which hold down the CPU's & CPU retainer brackets. The process is detailed in the next few steps.

  13. Remove the CPU bracket screws.

  14. Remove the CPU bracket screws.

  15. Lift out the motherboard overlay. The overlay is slotted at two locations.

  16. Remove the power cables, IDE cables, and the SCSI cables.

  17. Disconnect the cable from the motherboard.

  18. Remove the motherboard mounting screws.

  19. Remove the voltage regulator modules (VRMs). and the motherboard mounting screws.

  20. Remove the plastic PCI card guide. This plastic card guide is snapped into the chassis frame at the depicted two slots.

  21. Slide the motherboard toward front of unit. Then lift up the right side of the motherboard as shown in the graphic.

  22. Reverse the steps above for re-assemble unit.

Note: During the re-assembly process, place the motherboard edge in the tracks of the E-Pack. Looking at the unit from the front, the tracks should be on inner left side wall.
