Q: How do I remove and replace a memory board in the Gateway 9715 server?

A: Note: This document contains instructions for both hot swap (server running) and cold swap (server off) memory replacement. Memory can only be hot swapped if the memory boards are in a redundant configuration (RAID or mirroring). If the memory board is in a non-redundant configuration, the server must be turned off before replacing memory.

Hot Swap Replacement

Before starting this procedure, familiarize yourself with the LEDs and the power button on the top of the memory board.

Remove a memory board and DIMM

  1. Remove the server's top panel.

  2. Inside the case, press the power button on the top of the memory board being removed.

  3. The hot plug attention LED flashes for a short time and then turns off. Verify that the power LED is also off.

Note: Do not continue until both the hot plug attention and power LEDs are off. If the hot plug attention LED does not turn off, your configuration may not support hot swap memory board replacement. In this case, refer to the Cold Replacement section of this document.

  4. Press the memory board's handle release tab toward the memory board.

  2. Place the DIMM cover on the memory board. Ensure that all tabs and latches seat to secure the cover on the board.

Note: If applicable, remove a previously installed memory blank.

  3. Ensure that the handle of the memory board is in the up/open position.
