Q: How do I remove and replace/install a PCI card in the Gateway 9715 server?

A: Note: Only slots 1 - 5 are hot swap capable. Slots 6 and 7 are not. This document provides instructions for both hot and cold replacement.

Hot swap

On the motherboard, adjacent to each of the hot swap PCI slots are a power LED and an attention LED. There is also an attention button. The attention button is actuated by a plastic rod, which also is the light pipe for the LED, on the PCI divider. The top of the light pipe is indicated by the green arrow on the PCI divider label. When the top of the rod/light pipe is pressed, it presses on the attention button, initiating the hot swap sequence for the card in that slot.

Power LED (green)

  • Off - Power is off: All main rails have been removed from the slot and a card can be removed or installed.
  • On - Power is on: The slot is powered on. Do not remove or install a card.
  • Blinking - Power is in transition: The slot is in the process or powering up or down. Do not remove or install a card.

Attention LED (orange)

  • Off - Normal operation
  • On - Attention: There is a power fault or operational problem with the slot.
  • Blinking - Locate: The slot is being identified at the user's request.

Remove a PCI card

  1. Remove the case top panel.

  2. Turn off the card. You can do this using one of the following methods. Use only one:

    • Operating system hot plug interface - In the Microsoft® Windows® operating system on the taskbar, double-click the Unplug/Eject icon. In the Unplug or Eject Hardware menu, select the card you want to remove, and then click Stop.
    • Hardware hot plug interface - Press the attention button adjacent to the card you want to remove.

  3. Inside the case, wait for the PCI power LED adjacent to the card you want to remove to turn off, and then disconnect any cables attached to the card.

  4. At the rear of the case for the card you want to remove, press the card retention clip down, and then rotate it outward.

Replace/install a PCI card

  1. If not already done, turn off the power to the PCI slot in which you want to install the card by pressing the attention button for that slot. Wait for the power LED to turn off.

  2. If applicable, change any jumper settings on the card being installed.

  3. Align the card with the slot, and then press it firmly into place.

  4. Rotate the card retention clip inward to secure the card in the slot.

  5. Connect cables to the card.

  6. Initialize the card using one of the following methods. If replacing a card, the method depends on how the original card was removed. Use only one:

    • Operating system hot plug interface - In the Microsoft® Windows® operating system, wait for the interface to appear on the monitor, and then confirm the device to be enabled.
    • Hardware hot plug interface - Press the attention button adjacent to the card you installed. Wait for the power LED to turn on.

      Notes:

      • To abort the hardware hot plug interface, press the attention button with five seconds.
      • If the attention LED is blinking, a power fault has occurred. If LED continues to blink, remove the PCI card, wait for the LED to turn off, and then restart the hot plug installation.
