Windows NT 4.0 Server Installation for the 7450R or 935 Series Servers

Note: Gateway has not tested this operating system on this particular platform but has verified basic functionality in a lab environment. This information is provided as a courtesy only to those Gateway customers who choose to use this server operating system. These instructions do not in any way imply that Gateway fully supports this operating system.

Prerequisites

  • Microsoft® Windows NT® 4.0 Server CD
  • Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a on CD
  • Six formatted floppy disks for the following items:

    • Adaptec 7892 SCSI controller driver version D3.5 on floppy disk
    • Intel® PRO/1000 Gigabit network driver version 6.4 on floppy disk
    • ATI Rage XL Display driver on floppy disk

Configuration Notes: This step-by-step procedure was created using the most common configuration of the 7450R or 935 Server. It is intended to be used for a fresh installation of Windows NT 4.0 Server on a formatted hard drive. It is possible that some installation steps are not covered if options other than those specified in this document are selected during the setup process.

Preparing the Drivers

Because Windows NT 4.0 Server does not contain native drivers for the Intel PRO/1000 Gigabit network adapter, the on-board ATI video controller, or the Adaptec 7892 SCSI controller, you need to install the drivers during or after the Windows NT 4.0 Server installation. Perform the following steps to download the drivers, and then create drivers disks for each device.

Note: If the ATI video drivers are not installed, Windows NT 4.0 supports a default resolution of 640 × 480.

  • Create the Adaptec 7892 SCSI controller driver disk.

    1. From the www.gateway.com download center, locate the 7510578a.exe file. As of the writing of this document, the path is: http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?fn=7510578a.exe.

    2. After locating the file, click Download Now, and then save the file to the My Documents folder.

    3. After the download is complete, insert a formatted floppy disk into the floppy disk drive.

    4. In the My Documents folder, double-click the 7510578a.exe file.

    5. In the Zip Magic Self-Extracting dialog box, click Next.

    6. In the next dialog box, change the destination directory to A:. Click Next.

    7. When extraction is complete, click Finish.

    8. Remove the floppy disk from the floppy disk drive. Label it "Adaptec SCSI Driver for Windows NT".

  • Create the Intel PRO/1000 Gigabit network adapter driver disks.

    1. From the www.intel.com download center, locate the pront4.exe file. As of the writing of this document, the path is: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/download.asp?url=/4232/eng/PRONT4.exe.

    2. After locating the file, click Download (recommended site), and then save the file to the My Documents folder.

    3. Insert a formatted floppy disk into the floppy disk drive.

    4. In the My Documents folder, double-click the pront4.exe file.

    5. In the License Agreement dialog box, select I Accept, and then click Next.

    6. In the next dialog box, to save the files to the default location, C:\IntelPRO, click Next.

    7. Open Windows Explorer, double-click the C: drive, double-click the IntelPRO folder, double-click the MakeDisk folder, and then double-click the MakeNT.bat file.

    8. When prompted, to start the file copy process for disk 1, press any key (SPACEBAR).

    9. Files copy.

    10. When prompted, remove the floppy disk from the drive, and then label it "NIC 1".

    11. Insert another blank floppy disk, and then press any key (SPACEBAR).

    12. Files copy.

    13. When complete, close the command prompt window, remove the floppy disk from the drive, and then label it "NIC 2".

    14. Set the disks aside until needed during the installation of Windows 4.0 Server.

  • Create the ATI Rage XL driver disks.

    1. From the www.gateway.com download center, locate the 7510580.exe file. As of the writing of this document, the path is: http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?fn=7510580.exe.

    2. After locating the file, click Download Now, and then save the file to the My Documents folder.

    3. In the My Documents folder, double-click the 7510580.exe file.

    4. In the self-extractor dialog box that opens, click Next.

    5. To extract the files to C:\drivers\7501580, click Unzip.

    6. Open the C:\drivers\7501580 folder, and then insert a formatted floppy disk into the floppy disk drive.

    7. In the C:\drivers\7501580 folder, right-click (secondary click) the Disk1 folder, and then click Send to 3 1/2 floppy (A:).

    8. Files copy.

    9. When complete, remove the floppy disk from the drive, and then label it "ATI Disk 1".

    10. Repeat steps 7, 8, and 9 for the folders labeled Disk2 and Disk3. Label the respective disks "ATI Disk 2" and "ATI Disk 3".

Windows NT 4.0 Server Operating System Installation

  1. Start the server with the Windows NT 4.0 CD in the CD-ROM drive. The computer starts from the CD.

  2. As soon as the "Setup is inspecting you hardware configuration" message appears, press the F6 key.

    Note: This message appears for only a few seconds. If you miss pressing the F6 key, restart the computer, and then press F6 as soon as the message appears.

  3. On the Install Additional Mass Storage Device screen, to install additional drivers, press the S key.

  4. Insert the floppy disk labeled "Adaptec SCSI Driver for Windows NT", and then press the ENTER key.

  5. The Adaptec Ultra 160/m Family PCI SCSI controller (NT40) driver is found. Press ENTER.

  6. When prompted to continue setup, press ENTER.

  7. Files copy.

  8. On the Welcome to Setup screen, select Set up Windows NT 4.0 Server now by pressing ENTER.

  9. On the Mass Storage Device screen, press ENTER.

  10. If the hard drive is new or formatted, the "Setup has determined that one or more of your hard disks has more the 1024 cylinders" message appears. To continue with setup, press ENTER. If you did not get this message, skip to step 15.

    Note: If the "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer" message appears, then you missed steps 2 through 6.

  11. On the next screen, to continue, press the C key.

  12. On the License Agreement screen, use the PAGE DOWN key to aid in reading or scrolling through the document. At the bottom of the page, to agree to the terms and continue, press the F8 key.

  13. On the hardware and software component screen, press ENTER.

  14. On the disk management screen, to create a partition on the un-partitioned space for Windows NT 4.0 Server, press C.

  15. Either accept the default partition size, or press the BACKSPACE key to erase the value, and then type the partition size that you want to use. Partition sizes are determined in megabytes (MB), that is, 1,024 MB = 1 gigabye (GB). The largest size a primary FAT16 partition can be is 2,048 MB, and the largest size a primary NTFS partition can be is 4,048 MB. When you are finished creating your partition, press ENTER.

  16. Select the file format, FAT16 or NTFS, with which to format the partition. NTFS is recommended for Windows NT 4.0 Server. To begin formatting, press ENTER.

  17. While Setup formats the partition, a progress bar appears.

  18. To select the default \Winnt folder for Windows NT 4.0 Server files, press ENTER.

  19. To allow Setup to examine the computer hard drives for corruption, press ENTER.

  20. After the examination is complete, the first portion of Setup is complete. Remove all media from the CD-ROM and floppy disk drives, and then, to restart the computer, press ENTER.

    Note: If the Windows NT 4.0 Server CD is left in CD-ROM drive, the computer starts from the CD and repeats the first portion of Setup again.

  21. If you chose to format your partition with the NTFS file system, on restarting, a blue screen appears, and the file system is converted from FAT16 to NTFS. When complete, the computer automatically restarts.

  22. After restarting, Setup prompts you to place the Windows NT 4.0 CD in the CD-ROM drive. After closing the CD-ROM drive tray, allow the drive several seconds to initialize the disc, and then click OK.

  23. The Windows NT Setup screen explains the next three portions of the setup procedure. Click Next.

  24. In the Name and Organization dialog box, type the appropriate information, and then click Next.

  25. When prompted, type the Product Key, and then click Next.

  26. In the next dialog box, select the licensing mode you want to use. If additional Client Access Licenses were purchased, add the appropriate number of additional licenses when choosing Per Server mode. Click Next.

  27. When prompted to type the computer name, remember that the computer name must be unique on the network. It is helpful to use a computer name that is descriptive as well as unique. After typing the computer name, click Next.

  28. In the next dialog box, select the correct option for your environment. For the purpose of this document, Stand-Alone Server was chosen. Click Next.

  29. When prompted, create an Administrative password. Verify that Caps Lock is turned off before typing the password. Click Next.

  30. When prompted to create an Emergency Repair Disk (ERD), select No, and then click Next.

  31. The next dialog box lists the default Windows NT 4.0 components to be installed. Make changes to the list based on your needs, and then click Next.

  32. In the next dialog box, to start the network portion of setup, click Next.

  33. In the next dialog box, select how you would like this computer to participate on the network. For the purpose of this document the default settings were used. When complete, click Next.

  34. In the next dialog box, unless the computer's environment requires it, clear the Install IIS(Internet Information Server) check box, and then click Next.

  35. When prompted to select a network adapter, click Select from List.

  36. Insert the NIC 1 floppy disk into the floppy disk drive, and then click Have Disk.

  37. In the next dialog box, verify that the path is A:. Click OK.

  38. In the next dialog box, select Intel(R) PRO/1000 Family Adapter, and then click OK.

  39. In the next dialog box, verify that the Intel(R) PRO/1000 Family Adapter check box is selected, and then click Next.

  40. When prompted, select the protocols to install, and then click Next.

    Note: For the purpose of this document TCP/IP was the only protocol installed.

  41. When prompted to select Network Services, to select the default options, click Next.

  42. Files copy.

  43. When prompted, replace the NIC 1 floppy disk with the NIC 2 floppy disk, and then click OK.

  44. In the DHCP dialog box, select No. For the purpose of this document a Static IP address is used.

  45. In the Microsoft TCP/IP Properties dialog box, specify an IP address and subnet mask, and then click Apply. Click OK.

    Example:
    Ip address - 192.168.1.1
    Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0

  46. In the Network Services dialog box, click Next.

  47. When prompted to complete the network installation, click Next.

  48. In the Workgroup or Domain dialog box, click Next.

    Note: Default settings were used for the purpose of this document.

  49. In the next dialog box, click Finish.

  50. Set the correct date and time, and then click Next.

  51. In the Detected Display dialog box, click OK.

  52. In the Display Properties dialog box, click OK.

  53. The next dialog box states that Windows NT 4.0 Server Setup is complete. Remove all media from the floppy disk and CD-ROM drives, and then click Finish.

  54. In the Welcome to Windows dialog box, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE.

  55. When prompted, type the Administrator password you created during setup, and then press ENTER.

  56. A Welcome to Windows NT dialog box opens. Close it.

  57. Place the Service Pack 6a CD in the CD-ROM drive. If this Service pack CD is from Microsoft, it automatically runs, and an Internet Explorer window opens. Close the window.

  58. From the Start menu, point to Find, and then click Files or folders.

  59. In the Find Files or Folders dialog box, in the Name box type: Sp6i386.exe. In the Look In box, select the CD-ROM drive. Click Search.

  60. When the Sp6i386.exe file is located, copy it, and then paste it on the desktop screen.

  61. Remove the Service Pack CD from the drive.

  62. On the desktop screen, double-click the Sp6i386.exe file.

  63. In the License Agreement dialog box, select the I Accept check box, and then click Next.

  64. When prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

  65. After restarting, log on to Windows.

Installing Remaining Drivers

After installing Windows NT 4.0 Server, all devices for which there were no native Windows NT drivers must be installed. For a commonly configured Gateway 7450R or 935 Server, this includes the display adapter. Additional components such as tape drives, SCSI controllers, and modems may also require drivers but are not covered in this document.

ATI Video Driver Installation

  1. Locate ATI Disk 1, which you created at the beginning of this document. Insert it into the floppy disk drive.

  2. Locate and run the Setup.exe file on the disk.

  3. Files copy.

  4. When prompted, replace ATI Disk 1 with ATI Disk 2, and then click OK.

  5. Files copy.

  6. When prompted, replace ATI Disk 2 with ATI Disk 3, and then click OK.

  7. Files copy.

  8. When prompted to restart the computer, remove ATI Disk 3, and then click OK.

  9. After restarting, log on to Windows, and then adjust the video settings as desired.

The basic Windows NT 4.0 Server installation for the 7450R or 935 server is complete.
