Q: What can I do when McAfee products do not uninstall properly?

A: The correct way to remove a McAfee product is to use Add/Remove Programs in Windows XP, or Uninstall a Program in Windows Vista. However, in some cases the recommended method may not totally remove a McAfee product. In those cases, the MCPR.EXE tool should be used. This free tool is available from the McAfee Web site at the following location:
http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/displayDoc.asp?docID=408302&categoryId=246&lastCategoryLog=1&HotTopic=YES

This tool works with Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP Home and Professional, and all versions of Windows Vista. It does not work with Windows 98 or Windows Me. The tool removes all 2005, 2006, and 2007 McAfee consumer products.

  1. Download the removal tool from http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/mcpr.exe.

  2. Click Save, and then save the file to your desktop.

  3. Navigate to your desktop and perform the following:

    • In Windows XP, double-click the MCPR.exe icon to run the program.
    • In Windows Vista, right-click the MCPR.exe icon and then click Run as Administrator. Click Continue or enter an administrative username and password.

  4. A McAfee Cleanup window displays.
