Q: Why do some Java-based programs fail to run or generate an error similar to "MSJAVA.DLL was not found"?

A: Java programs may fail to run or generate errors similar to "MSJAVA.DLL was not found" if Java software is not installed. New Microsoft Windows XP computers shipped from Gateway already have Java software installed. However, if Windows XP is reinstalled using backup media, it will not have Java software installed. Since Windows XP does not include Java software, it must be installed separately. If Java software is not installed on the computer, it may be installed through one of the following methods.

Method 1: Install Java Software from Application and Driver Recovery

  1. From the Start menu, point to All Programs, System Recovery, and then click Application and Driver Recovery.

    Note: If Application and Driver Recovery is not listed, from the Start menu, click Run. In the Run dialog box, type: C:\Windows\Sminst\install_app.exe, and then click OK.

  2. In the Application Recovery Program window, select Sun Java, and then click Install.

  3. In the INSTALL dialog box, click Quit.

 

Method 2: Install Java Software from Vendor of Application

If an application you are using requires Java to be installed for it to work properly, contact the vendor of the application to supply you with the appropriate version of Java.

 

Method 3: Download Java Software

  1. In your Internet browser, go to the following address: http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html.

  2. In the Get Java Software window, click Download now. It's free!.

  3. In the Security Warning dialog box, click Yes.

  4. Java software is downloaded. This may take several minutes depending on the Internet connection speed.

  5. In the InstallShield Wizard dialog box, click Yes.

  6. In the InstallShield Wizard dialog box, click Next.

  7. Java 2 Runtime Environment is installed.

  8. When Java has finished successfully, a congratulations message appears.
