Q: Is there a utility, similar to eraser2k.exe for Office 2000, that removes all remnants of Works?

A: Yes, the following steps can be used in Works Suite 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, or Works 7.0/8.0, if there are difficulties completely removing or reinstalling the applications.

  1. Remove Works Suite 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, or Works 7.0/8.0 from Add or Remove Programs, using normal procedures.

  2. Run the Microsoft Works Clean Up Utility appropriate for your operating system and version of Works or Works Suite.

    Works Suite 2000: The Microsoft Works 6/2001 Clean Up Utility is not located on backup media. The utility must be downloaded from Microsoft.

    Works Suite 2001: The Microsoft Works 6/2001 Clean Up Utility is not located on backup media. The utility must be downloaded from Microsoft.

    Works Suite 2002: The Microsoft Works 6/2001 Clean Up Utility is found in the \MSWorks\PSS folder of the Works Suite 2002 Media.

      Windows 98 or Windows Me: \MSWorks\PSS\Wks6.exe
      Windows 2000: \MSWorks\PSS\Wks6w2k.exe
      Windows XP: \MSWorks\PSS\Wks6w2k.exe

    Works Suite 2003, 2004, or Works 7.0: The Microsoft Works 7/Suite 2003 Clean Up Utility is found in the \MSWorks\PSS folder of the Works 7 or Works Suite 2003/2004 Media.

    Works Suite 2005 or 8.0: The Microsoft Works 7/8 and Suite 2003/2004/2005 Clean Up Utility is found in the \MSWorks\PSS folder of the Works Suite 2005 or Works 8.0 media.

      Windows XP: \MSWorks\PSS\Wks8xp.exe

    Note: The screenshots and following steps are from the Microsoft Works 7/Suite 2003 Clean Up Utility in Windows XP, but all versions of the utility have similar steps.

    • Browse for and double-click the executable for the Microsoft Works Clean Up Utility appropriate for your operating system and version of Works or Works Suite.
    • In the Microsoft Works 7/Suite 2003 Clean Up Utility for Windows XP dialog box, click Yes.

    • Files copy and several windows flash on the screen.
    • In the Microsoft Works 7/Suite 2003 Clean Up Utility for Windows XP dialog box, click OK.

  3. Install the Windows Installer Clean Up Utility appropriate for your operating system and version of Works or Works Suite.

    Works Suite 2000: The Windows Installer Clean Up Utility is not located on backup media. The utility must be downloaded from Microsoft.

    Works Suite 2001: The Windows Installer Clean Up Utility is not located on backup media. The utility must be downloaded from Microsoft.

    Works Suite 2002: The Microsoft Works 6/2001 Clean Up Utility is found in the \MSWorks\PSS folder of the Works Suite 2002 Media.

    • Browse for and double-click the executable for the Windows Installer Clean Up Utility appropriate for your operating system and version of Works or Works Suite.
    • In the Windows Installer Clean Up Setup window, click Next.

    • In the Windows Installer Clean Up Setup window, select I accept the License Agreement, and then click Next.

    • In the Windows Installer Clean Up Setup window, click Next.

    • Files copy.

    • In the Windows Installer Clean Up Setup window, click Finish.

  4. Run the Windows Installer Clean Up Utility.

    Note: The screenshots and following steps are from the Windows Install Clean Up Utility in Windows XP, but all versions of the utility have similar steps.

    • From the Start menu, point to Programs or All Programs, and then click Windows Installer Clean Up.
    • In the Windows Installer Clean Up dialog box, select Works or Works Suite, and then click Remove.

    • In the Windows Installer Clean Up dialog box, click OK.

    • The application is removed. In the Windows Installer Clean Up dialog box, click Exit.

  5. Clean boot the computer using MSConfig.

    Windows 98 or Windows Me

    • From the Start menu, click Run.
    • In the Run dialog box, type: Msconfig. Click OK.
    • In the System Configuration Utility window, on the General tab, click Selective startup, and then click to clear the Process Config.sys file check box, the Process Autoexec.bat file check box, the Process Winstart.bat file check box (if available), and the Load startup group items check box.
    • Click the Win.ini tab.
    • On the Win.ini tab, click the plus (+) sign to expand the [windows] folder, and then click to clear the Load= check box and the Run= check box.
    • Click OK, and then click Yes to restart your computer.

    Windows XP

    Note: You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.

    • From the Start menu, click Run.
    • In the Run dialog box, type: msconfig. Click OK.
    • In the System Configuration Utility window, on the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Process SYSTEM.INI File check box, the Process WIN.INI File check box, and the Load Startup Items check box.
    • Click the Services tab.
    • On the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
    • Click OK, and then click Restart to restart your computer.

  6. Reinstall Works Suite 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 or Works 7.0/8.0, using normal procedures.

  7. Run MSConfig and return to normal startup.

    • From the Start menu, click Run.
    • In the Run dialog box, type: msconfig. Click OK.
    • In the System Configuration Utility window, on the General tab, click Normal Startup, and then click OK.
    • In the System Configuration dialog box, click Restart.
