Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How can I ensure that a safe point is created in System Restore before I make a critical change to the computer?

A: System Restore creates safe points every 10 hours that the computer is on. If the computer is off for more than 24 hours, the next time the computer is turned on, a safe point is created. To ensure that a safe point is available, run System Restore to create a safe point manually before making changes to the computer. Changes include adding software or hardware.

Note: System Restore does not restore user files. Some programs store macros and settings in user files. If one of these settings causes an issue, System Restore cannot solve the issue. If GoBack or another program that provides restore functionality is installed, System Restore is disabled. GoBack automatically tracks all file changes on the computer including user files.

Use the following steps to create a safe point:

  1. From the Start menu, point to Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then click System Restore.

  2. In the System Restore dialog box, select Create a Restore Point, and click Next.

  3. In the System Restore dialog box, type a description of the safe point in the Restore point description field that makes it clear what change is about to be performed. For example, if an upgraded video card is being installed, use a name like "Before installing upgraded video card."

  4. After typing the description, click Next.

The Safe Point can be used to restore functionality to the computer in case the change causes an issue.
