Repair Installation (Windows XP Already Installed) Note: Due to the large number of virus and spyware threats on the internet, it is advised to disconnect all internet connections when reinstalling Windows® until antivirus software and firewall software can be installed. Once the antivirus software and firewall software have been installed, the internet connection should be re-enabled to update the antivirus definitions and perform Windows Updates.
Note: Steps 3 and 4 of these instructions reference the folder where Windows is located after a reinstallation - C:\Windows. If Windows has not been reinstalled, these steps need to be performed from the C:\WINNT folder instead. This is the folder Windows resides in after the original factory load.
- From the Start menu, click Run.
- In the Run dialog box, in the Open text box, type: cmd. Click OK.

- Delete the undo_guimode.txt file. In the C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe dialog box, type: del /a /f c:\windows\system32\undo_guimode.txt. Press the ENTER key.

Note: If a "Could not find C:\Windows\System32\Undo_guimode.txt" message appears, then the file was not created. Proceed to step 4.
- In the C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe dialog box, type: exit. Press ENTER.

- Verify that the computer is turned off, and then disconnect all USB devices such as a printer, scanner, or camera. This does not include a USB mouse or keyboard.
- Turn on the computer with the Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional CD inserted into the CD-ROM drive.
- A message appears momentarily prompting you to press a key to boot to the CD. Press any key. If the computer does not start to the CD, restart the computer and try again.

- The computer reads the CD and starts Windows XP Setup.
- Windows XP Professional Setup prepares to run. If you need to install a third-party SCSI or RAID driver, press the F6 key during startup.

- The option for an Automated System Recovery appears momentarily.

- Setup loads the files necessary for the installation, and then starts Windows.

- On the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to begin the installation of Windows XP.

- The Licensing Agreement appears. Press the F8 key.

- Windows Setup detects a previous installation of Windows XP. Press the R key to repair the installation.

- The partitioned space on the hard drive is shown. Press ENTER.

- Windows Setup copies files to the hard drive.

- The Windows XP configuration is initialized.

- The computer is restarted. The Windows XP Professional startup screen appears momentarily.

- If necessary, make changes to the regional and language settings, and then click Next.

- On the Network settings screen, select Typical settings, and then click Next.

- On the Workgroup or Computer Domain screen, leave the default option selected, and then click Next.

- The installation continues.

- When the installation is finished, the computer automatically restarts. Windows XP starts. In the Display Settings dialog box, click OK.
Note: This dialog box and the following Monitor Settings dialog box may not open depending on the video configuration in the computer.

- On the Welcome to Microsoft Windows screen, click Next.

- The next few screens may appear depending upon what hardware is configured in the computer and existing software settings.
- If there is a network interface controller (NIC) in the computer, Windows XP checks for Internet connectivity on the network.

- On the How will this computer connect to the Internet screen, click Skip. Use the Internet Connection Wizard after the installation is completed.
Note: This is a second screen that only appears if there is a NIC in the computer.

- If there is a modem in the computer, a Do you want to set up Internet access now screen appears. Select No, not at this time, and then click Next.

- On the Ready to register with Microsoft screen, select No, not at this time, and then click Next.

- If the Who will use this computer screen appears (depends on the state of the users accounts folder), type the names of the expected users, and then click Next.
Note: The user names typed here appear in alphabetical order on the Welcome screen.

- On the Thank you screen, click Finish.

- The Welcome screen appears momentarily.
Note: If more than one user was entered on the Who will use this Computer screen, you have to choose a user to log on.

- The Windows XP installation is complete. The Windows XP desktop appears. Remove the blue Operating System CD, and then insert the red Drivers CD into the CD-ROM drive.

- In the System Restoration Kit window, select the Select all check box, and then click Install.

- Upon completion of the driver installations, remove the red Drivers CD, and then insert the yellow Applications CD, disc 1 of 2, into the CD-ROM drive. In the System Restoration Kit window, select the appropriate applications, and then click Install.
Note: If the customer wants applications on Applications disc 2, remove the first Applications CD and insert the second. In the System Restoration Kit window, select the appropriate applications, and then click Install.

- The applications are installed. The installation is finished.
