Q: I do not see all installed items in the Add/Remove Windows Components list. How do I see them?

A:
Some items are installed during Windows Setup but do not appear in the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel. To re-enable these features, you must edit the Sysoc.inf file. Follow these steps to unhide entries:
  1. Open Search.
    • From the Windows XP default Start menu, click Search.
    • From the Windows XP Classic Start menu, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders….

  2. In the Search Results window, click All files and folders.

  3. On the Search Results window, type: sysoc.inf in the All or part of the file name: text box. Verify that the hard disk drive is selected from the Look in drop down menu.

  4. In the Search Results window, click More advanced options, click to select Search hidden files and folders, and then click Search.

    Note: Changing the Folder Options to Show hidden files and folders does not affect this search.

  5. In the right pane of the Search Results window, double-click Sysoc.inf.

  6. In Sysoc.inf's Notepad window, click Edit, and then click Replace.

  7. In the Replace dialog box, in the Find what text box, type: HIDE. Leave the Replace with text box empty. Click Replace All. When finished, click Cancel to close the dialog box.

  8. In Sysoc.inf's Notepad window, click File and then click Exit.

  9. In the Notepad dialog box, click Yes to save the changes.

  10. In the Search Results window, click File and then click Close.

  11. Open Control Panel.
    • From the Windows XP default Start menu, click Control Panel.
    • From the Windows XP Classic Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  12. Open Add/Remove Programs.
    • If the computer is in Category View, click Add/Remove Programs.
    • If the computer is in Classic View, double-click Add/Remove Programs.

  13. In the Add/Remove Programs window, click Add/Remove Windows Components.

  14. In the Windows Components Wizard dialog box, click to select the check boxes of the items to be installed, and then click Next.

  15. After the items are installed, click Finish.
