Q: How do I create an MS-DOS Startup Disk in Windows XP?

A:
Follow these steps to create an MS-DOS startup disk that allows you to start into MS-DOS.

Note: Creating an MS-DOS startup disk erases all information on the floppy disk. Additionally, the MS-DOS startup disk only allows the computer to start to an MS-DOS prompt. The disk contains no additional tools.

  1. With the computer in Microsoft® Windows® XP, insert a floppy disk into the computer's floppy disk drive.

  2. Open My Computer.

    • From the Windows XP default Start menu, click My Computer.
    • From the Windows XP classic menu, double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop.

  3. In the My Computer window, click the floppy disk drive. From the File menu, click Format.

  4. In the Format 3 1/2 Floppy (A:) dialog box, under Format options, select the Create an MS-DOS startup disk check box, and then click Start.

  5. Click OK.

  6. The floppy disk is formatted.

  7. Click OK.

  8. Click Close.
