- Open Control Panel.
- From the Microsoft® Windows® XP default Start menu, click Control Panel.
- From the Windows XP classic Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- In Control Panel, open Taskbar and Start Menu.
- If the computer is in Category View, click Appearance and Themes, and then click Taskbar and Start Menu.
- If the computer is in Classic View, double-click the Taskbar and Start Menu icon.
- In the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box, click the Start Menu tab.
- To change the Windows XP default Start menu to the classic Start menu, click Classic Start menu, and then click OK.
Note: Some icons like My Computer and My Documents are placed on the desktop following this procedure.
