Frequently Asked Questions

Q: In Windows Me, why does my computer not shut down, or stops responding on shutdown after installing a network card or cable modem?

A: Using incorrect network interface card (NIC) drivers in Windows® Me may create difficulties shutting down the computer. These difficulties can show up as error messages on shutdown, show up as power management issues, or cause the computer to stop responding. Incorrect NIC drivers are usually installed from third-party NICs.

Many customers subscribe to cable network service after purchasing their computers from Gateway and, consequently, they contract with their local cable company to install a third-party NIC into their computer. Often these cards are installed with Windows 98 drivers instead of Windows Me drivers. The cards appear to work, however the drivers may continually cause issues. Removing the NIC driver and software and physically removing the NIC allows the computer to function, shut down, and restart properly.

If you are experiencing these issues, update the NIC driver to a Windows Me version. If an updated driver is unavailable, you will need to obtain a different NIC that has Windows Me-compatible drivers.
