Q: How do I change the program that a file is associated with?

A:

Most commonly used file types such as text, bitmap, icon, document, and so forth, are associated with certain programs by default. This means, if you double-click a text file, for example, it is opened in Notepad; or if you click a bitmap file, it is opened in Paint Brush by default.

What if you want to use a program other than the currently associated one to open a particular file?

  1. Press and hold the SHIFT key, and then right-click the file.

  2. On the menu, click Open With.

  3. In the dialog box, from the list, select the program you want to use to open the current file.

  4. Click OK.
