Removing the Back Cover

  1. Before opening the computer case or memory bay, follow these guidelines.

    • Turn off the computer.
    • Wear a grounding wrist strap, available at most electronics stores, and attach it to a bare metal part of the computer.
    • Touch a bare metal surface on the back of the computer.
    • Disconnect all cords and peripheral devices, and then remove all PC Cards and disks.

  2. Remove the base by removing the thumbscrews on the base pedestals, and then lifting the computer off the base.

  3. Place the computer face-down on a clean, smooth surface. Be careful not to damage the LCD screen.

  4. Open the memory bay cover, and then remove all memory modules to avoid damaging them while working on the internal components.

  5. Remove the six screws on the back panel.

  6. Verify that the PC Card eject button is completely pushed in.

  7. Use your fingertips or a non-marring tool to pry up the lower-left corner of the back cover while pressing in the CD/DVD drive faceplate. If you do not press in the CD/DVD drive faceplate, it may break off when you remove the back cover.

  8. Lift the left side of the cover until the small internal latch on the left side snaps free, and then continue to lift until the small internal latches along the top of the cover snap free.

  9. Continue lifting the left side of the cover, hinging on the right side of the cover, until it can be removed, and then store it in a safe place.

    Note: While working on internal components, do not handle or remove the conductive foam block.

Replacing the Hard Disk

  1. Remove the back cover by following the steps in Removing the Back Cover.

  2. Remove the three screws that secure the hard disk to the drive bay, and then slide the hard disk out approximately one inch to provide adequate working room.

  3. Remove the hard disk data or ribbon cable.

  4. Remove the hard disk power cord.

  5. Slide the hard disk out of the bay.

  6. Slide the new hard disk into the bay.

  7. Connect the hard disk power cord, and then connect the hard disk data or ribbon cable.

  8. Slide the hard disk further into the bay until the threaded screw holes on the hard disk line up with the holes in the drive bay.

  9. Secure the hard disk to the bay using the three screws that you removed previously.

  10. If you have finished replacing the internal components, replace the back cover.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Replacing the CD/DVD Drive

  1. Remove the back cover by following the steps in Removing the Back Cover.

  2. Loosen, but do not remove, the tension screw, and then remove the two small screws that secure the drive to the drive bay.

  3. Grip the drive body, but not the drive faceplate, and pull it out of the bay. The graphic shows where the two small screws are located.

  4. Slide the new drive into the bay until it attaches securely to the data connector.

  5. Secure the drive to the bay using the two screws you removed, and then tighten the tension screw.

  6. If you have finished replacing the internal components, replace the back cover.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Replacing the Floppy Disk Drive

  1. Remove the back cover by following the steps in Removing the Back Cover.

  2. If there is an electrical cord coming out of a retaining clip on top of the disk drive bay, move it out of the way.

  3. Remove the four screws that secure the drive to the drive bay.

  4. Slide the drive out of the bay approximately one inch to provide adequate working room.

  5. Remove any cable that is in the way of the floppy disk drive connection to the motherboard.

  6. Use your fingertips or a non-marring tool to lift the floppy disk drive data or ribbon cable connector from the motherboard.

  7. Remove the data or ribbon cable from the connector.

  8. Slide the drive completely out of the bay.

  9. Slide the new drive into the bay.

  10. Connect the data or ribbon cable to the floppy disk drive.

  11. Insert the new floppy disk drive data or ribbon cable into the connector on the motherboard.

  12. Press down on the two connector clips until they click into place.

  13. Slide the new drive further into the bay until the threaded screw holes on the drive line up with the holes on the drive bay, and then secure the drive to the bay using the four screws you removed previously.

  14. If you have finished replacing the internal components, replace the back cover.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Replacing the Mini-PCI Card

  1. Remove the back cover by following the steps in Removing the Back Cover.

  2. Temporarily disconnect cables as necessary to access the mini-PCI card slot.

  3. Press outward on both retaining clips until the card tips up.

  4. Take the card out of the slot, and then disconnect the cables.

    Note: Depending upon the type of mini-PCI card installed, there may be one (modem or network) or two (combination modem and network) cables.

  5. Connect the appropriate cables to the new mini-PCI card.

  6. Insert the new card into the slot at a shallow angle, and then press it down until it snaps into place.

  7. Connect the motherboard cables you disconnected previously.

  8. If you have finished replacing the internal components, replace the back cover.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Replacing the Back Cover

  1. Verify that all internal components and cords have been correctly replaced and connected.

  2. Replace the back cover of the system by first aligning the right side of the cover with the case, and then carefully pivoting the cover down until the left side of the cover snaps into place. While replacing the cover, guide the cover edges around port connectors and the CD/DVD drive faceplate.

  3. Secure the back cover to the system using the six screws you removed earlier.

  4. Install the memory modules you removed, and then attach the memory bay cover.

  5. Attach the base by mounting the system onto the base pedestals, and then securing the system to the pedestals using the two thumbscrews.

  6. Connect the power cords and peripheral devices.
