Q: How do I get my printer to be listed under Device Manager in Windows XP or Windows 2000?

A: Windows XP

  1. Open Control Panel.

    • From the Microsoft® Windows® XP default Start menu, click Control Panel.
    • From the classic Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. In Control Panel, open System.

    • If the computer is in Category View, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click the System icon.
    • If the computer is in Classic View, double-click System.

  3. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

  4. In Device Manager, from the View menu, click Show hidden devices.

  5. The hidden devices are now displayed in Device Manager.

Windows 2000

  1. From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. In Control Panel, double-click the System icon.

  3. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab.

  4. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.

  5. In Device Manager, from the View menu, click Show hidden devices.

  6. The hidden devices are now displayed in Device Manager.

Note: This only identifies USB printers. Use the following steps to correctly identify a parallel printer.

Windows XP

  1. From the Start menu, click Printers and Faxes.

  2. Your printer is listed in the Printers and Faxes dialog box if it is installed correctly.

Windows 2000

  1. From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. In Control Panel, double-click the Printers icon.

  3. Your printer is listed in the Printers dialog box if it is installed correctly.
