Q: How do I perform a BIOS flash recovery on a Gateway 500 SE computer?

A: To flash recover the BIOS on a Gateway® 500 SE computer, perform the following steps:

  1. Using the Windows® Me Help files, create a Windows Me Startup disk.

  2. Copy the BIOS files and autoexec.bat file to the Startup disk.

  3. Insert the Startup disk into the floppy disk drive.

  4. Turn off the computer and then disconnect the power cord.

  5. Remove the case cover.

  6. Inside the case, locate the J14 flash recovery jumper block in the lower-right corner of the motherboard.

  7. Move the jumper from pins 1 and 2 to pins 2 and 3.

  8. Connect the power cord, and then turn on the computer.

  9. The computer starts to the floppy disk.

  10. After the BIOS has been flashed, turn off the computer, and then disconnect the power cord.

  11. Inside the case, move the flash recovery jumper from pins 2 and 3 to pins 1 and 2.

  12. Replace the case cover, connect the power cord, and then turn on the computer.
