Q: How do I use the Windows XP Wireless Zero Configuration to configure the wireless adapter in Windows XP Service Pack 2?

A: Windows® XP Service Pack 2 Wireless Zero Configuration

Note: Microsoft® Windows® XP has built-in configuration tools. Use the Windows XP Wireless Zero Configuration, located in the system tray at the bottom of your screen, to configure the adapter.

  1. After installing the adapter, the Windows XP Wireless Zero Configuration icon appears on your system tray. Double-click the icon with one monitor and 3 wave lines on the right side.

    Note: If it has already been set up, right-click the icon and select View Available Wireless Networks.

  2. If the network does not have WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) encryption enabled, in the Wireless Network Connection dialog box, in the Available Wireless Networks box, select a network, and then click Connect.

  3. The Wireless Network Connection dialog box opens and detects the network type.

  4. In the next Wireless Network Connection dialog box, at the prompt, You are connecting to the unsecured network, "your wireless network". Information sent over this network is not encrypted and might be visible to other people, click Connect Anyway.

  5. If your network has enabled WEP encryption, in the Wireless Network Connection dialog box, in the Choose a wireless network list, select a network, and then click Connect.

  6. The Wireless Network Connection dialog box opens and detects the network type.

  7. In the next Wireless Network Connection dialog box, at the prompt, The Network "your network" requires a network key (also called a WEP key or WPA key)..., type the key, and then click Connect.

    Note: Windows XP does not support the use of a WEP passphrase. Type the exact key used by your access point.

  8. After connecting, you are returned to the Wireless Network Connection dialog box.

  9. When finished, click the red X to close the dialog box.

Advanced Configuration Screens

  1. After installing the adapter, the Windows XP Wireless Zero Configuration icon appears on your system tray. Double-click the icon with one monitor and 3 wave lines on the right side.

  2. For Advanced Setup, on the left side column, click Change Advanced Settings.

  3. To view Wireless Network Connection Properties, click the Wireless Networks tab.

  4. To modify a preferred network, under Wireless Network Connections Properties click the Properties button.

Configuration Wizard to Setup Multiple Wireless Computers With WEP Enabled

Note: This requires a removable USB Flash drive, and Windows XP with SP2 or above on all systems.

  1. After installing the adapter, the Windows XP Wireless Zero Configuration icon appears on your system tray. Double-click the icon with one monitor and 3 wave lines on the right side.

    Note: If it has already been set up, right-click the icon and select View Available Wireless Networks.

  2. In the left column under Network Tasks, click Set up a wireless network for a home or small office.

  3. In the Wireless Network Setup Wizard, click Next.

  4. In the next Wireless Network Setup Wizard box, you are prompted to Select a task. Select Set up a new wireless network, and then click Next.

  5. In the Create a name for your wireless network dialog box, type your SSID. If your Access Point does not automatically assign a WEP or WPA select Manually assign a network key, (many home setups require this). Click Next.

  6. If you selected Manually assign a network key, in the Enter a WEP key for your wireless network dialog box, enter your key and then click Next.

  7. In the How do you want to set up your network? dialog box, verify the default of Use a USB flash drive (recommended) is selected, and then click Next.

  8. In the Save settings to your flash drive dialog box, if you have not done so already, plug your USB flash drive in now. When the drive letter to appears in the Drive Selection box, select the correct drive letter, and then click Next.

  9. The Transfer your network settings to your other computers or devices. dialog box opens and your network settings are saved to the flash drive.

  10. Remove the USB flash drive at this point.

    Note: If you click Next without removing the USB flash drive, a dialog box prompts, Please remove the flash drive or media. Remove the media, and then click OK.

    1. If your access point or router supports this, plug the flash drive into your wireless access point. Many devices blink their lights three times when the transfer is complete; otherwise wait 30 seconds.
    2. Plug the flash drive into each computer or device you want to add to your network.

      1. Plug the USB flash drive into a Windows XP system with a wireless card. In the What do you want Windows to do? dialog box, select Wireless Network Setup Wizard using the program provided on the device, and then click OK.

      2. At the prompt, Do you want to add this computer to the wireless network "your network"?, click OK.

      3. At the prompt, You have successfully added this computer to the wireless network "your network", click OK.

    3. Plug the flash drive back into this computer, and then click Next.

      Note: If you click Next without putting the flash drive back into the computer you are prompted, Please insert the flash drive before proceeding. Reinsert the USB flash drive, click OK, and then click Next.

  11. In The wizard completed successfully dialog box, click Finish.

  13. When finished, click the red X to close the dialog box.

    Note: If the original settings were incorrectly entered when you started the wizard, all computers will be setup incorrectly.
