CD-Rewritable (CD-RW), like CD-Recordable (CD-R), allows information to be recorded to a CD. With CD-RW, the contents of a CD can also be erased and new information written to it. Each CD type offers unique advantages.

With a CD-RW drive, there are two types of CDs used to make CDs:

  • CD-R advantages

    • Good for permanent data storage.
    • Less expensive per disc than CD-RW discs.
    • Readable on virtually all CD-ROM and CD-R drives.
    • Used when data does not need to be erased.

  • CD-RW advantages

    • Used when there is a need to erase the data and write new information, for example, when updating files.
    • Used to make a practice CD or to test the contents of a CD before making a permanent one.
    • More cost-effective for near line data storage requirements than CD-R.
