Keyboard This keyboard features full-sized keys with an embedded keypad, separate cursor keys, two Windows keys, and twelve function keys.

The keyboards for the Gateway® M500 and M505 notebooks are replaceable. For keyboard replacement, follow the instructions in the manual Replacing the Gateway M505 Keyboard.

You can attach an external keyboard to the computer using a USB port. You do not need to shut down the computer to connect a USB keyboard.

Keys   Description
NumLk (Num Lock)
(Fn+F11)
View Closeup When Num Lock is on, the embedded keypad is in numeric mode. The keys can function as a calculator complete with the arithmetic operators +, -, *, and \.
Scr Lk (Scroll Lock)
(Fn+F12)
View Closeup When Scroll Lock is on, the screen moves one line up or down when you press the UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW keys. Scroll Lock does not work with every program.
Caps Lock   When Caps Lock is on, all alphabetic characters typed are in uppercase. The Caps Lock status indicator appears while this function is turned on.
Windows logo key View Closeup Start button. Combinations with this key perform special functions. A few examples are:
  • Windows logo key + TAB (Activates next taskbar button)
  • Windows logo key + E (Opens My Computer)
  • Windows logo key + F (Finds a file)
  • Windows logo key + M (Minimizes All)
  • SHIFT + Windows logo key + M (Undoes Minimize All)
  • Windows logo key + R (Opens Run dialog box)
  • Application key
    (Fn+Application key)
    View Closeup Opens the program's context menu (same as a right-click).
    Hot keys / Function key combinations View Closeup You can use hot keys or key combinations to access most of your notebook's controls like screen contrast and brightness, volume output, and the BIOS Setup Utility. When activating hot keys, press and hold the Fn key before pressing the other key in the hotkey combination.
    Navigation keys / Brightness keys
    View Closeup Navigation keys: Press these keys to move the cursor to the beginning of a line, to the end of a line, up the page, down the page, to the beginning of a document, or to the end of a document.

    Brightness keys: Press these keys in combination with the Fn key to increase or decrease the LCD brightness.

    Numeric keypad
    View Closeup Use these keys to type numbers when the numeric keypad is turned on. Press Fn+NumLk to turn on the numeric keypad.
    Fn key
    View Closeup Press the Fn key in combination with a hot key to perform a specific action.
