Q: How do I replace the Mini PCI modem in the Gateway M500 and M505 notebooks?A: Warning: Disconnect the power adapter, disconnect the modem and network cables, and remove the battery before removing the Mini PCI bay cover. Replace the cover before restoring power or reconnecting the modem and network cables.
Note: Before beginning, review electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions.
Replacing the Mini PCI Modem
- Shut down the computer, and then disconnect the power adapter and modem and network cables.
- Turn the computer over, and then remove the battery.
- Loosen the modem bay screw. The screw is not removable.
- Remove the bay cover.
- Remove the two screws that secure the modem card.
- Lift the modem carefully from the connector and turn it over.
- Disconnect the modem cable from the modem.
- Connect the modem cable from the new modem card.
- Turn the modem over, align the screw holes and pins, and then carefully press down to connect it to the system.
- Replace the two screws that secure the modem card.
- Replace the bay cover.
- Replace the bay screw.
- Insert the battery and turn the notebook computer over.
- Connect the power adapter and modem and network cables, and then turn on the notebook computer.
