With SpeedStep, when the notebook computer is connected to the AC outlet, complex business and Internet applications run with speed virtually identical to a desktop computer. When using a battery to power the notebook computer, the processor drops to a lower frequency (by changing the bus ratios) and voltage, conserving battery life while maintaining a high level of performance.
When SpeedStep is enabled, the computer does not run at full speed until the faster speed is needed. This reduces power consumption and increases battery life.
If you are using Microsoft® Windows® XP, you can modify the Intel SpeedStep settings by the power scheme you select.
If you are using Windows 2000, you can change the SpeedStep settings using the Intel SpeedStep technology tab.
Follow these steps to change SpeedStep settings in Windows 2000.
- From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- In Control Panel, double-click the Power Management icon.
- In the Power Options Properties dialog box, click the Intel SpeedStep technology tab.
- On the Intel SpeedStep technology tab, change any of the following settings:
- To run the processor at full speed regardless of the power source, click the arrow button to open the Running on batteries list, and then click Maximum Performance.
- To run the processor at reduced speed (using less power) regardless of the power source, click the arrow button to open the Plugged in list, and then click Battery Optimized Performance.
- To turn off the SpeedStep technology control, click the Advanced tab, select the Disable Intel SpeedStep technology control check box, and then click Apply.
