Q: Why does the AC adapter spark when I plug it into the LPT port standoff on the Gateway M350WVN notebook?

A: This is seen when attempting to plug the adapter in blindly by reaching around to the back of the notebook instead of turning the notebook around. The plug on the adapter may accidentally come in contact with the screw standoffs on the LPT port and may produce a small spark.

This spark occurs because the prongs on the AC adapter are making contact with the metal.

Plugging the AC adapter into a LPT port standoff is not considered normal use. However, this has been extensively tested and approved safe by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL). During the tests the testers were not shocked and neither the AC adapter nor the M350WVN received damage.
