Keyboard This notebook keyboard has the full functionality of a desktop computer keyboard. Many of the keys have been assigned alternate functions, including shortcut keys for Windows, function keys for specific system operations, and the PAD LOCK keys for the numeric keypad.

You can attach an external keyboard to the computer using a USB or PS/2 port. You do not need to shut down the computer to connect a keyboard.

The keyboard for the Gateway® 400SD4 is replaceable. The keyboard part number is 7004212. For keyboard replacement, follow the instructions in Replacing the Gateway 400 Keyboard.

Key type Icon Description
A. Function/System keys   Press the function keys, labeled F1 to F12, to perform actions in programs. For example, pressing the F1 key may open Help. Each program uses different function keys for different purposes. Refer to the program documentation to find out more about the function key actions.

Press the colored system keys in combination with the Fn key to perform specific actions.

B. Navigation/Volume keys   Press the navigation keys to move the cursor to the beginning of a line, to the end of a line, up the page, down the page, to the beginning of a document, or to the end of a document.

Press the PgUP, PgDN, or Home keys in combination with the Fn key to increase or decrease the volume or mute the sound.

C. Arrow/LCD brightness keys   Press these keys to move the cursor up, down, right, or left. To increase or decrease the LCD brightness, use the Fn key plus the UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW keys.
D. Application key Application key Press for quick access to shortcut menus and help assistants in Windows.
E. Numeric keypad   Use these keys to type numbers when the numeric keypad is turned on. Press Fn+PAD LOCK to turn on the numeric keypad.
F. Windows key Windows key Press to open the Windows Start menu. This key can also be used in combination with other keys to open utilities. For example, press this key in combination with the F key to open the Search utility. Press this key in combination with the R key to open the Run utility. Press this key in combination with the E key to open the Explorer utility.
G. Fn key   Press the Fn key in combination with a green-colored system key, such as the STANDBY key, the PAUSE key, or the STATUS key, to perform a specific action.
