Q: How do I use an ExpressCard in the notebook?

A: The ExpressCard standard delivers thinner, faster and lighter modular expansion to computer users. Hardware capabilities such as memory, wired and wireless communication cards and security devices can be added by inserting these modules into the computer.
ExpressCard slots accommodate modules designed to use either Universal Serial Bus (USB) 2.0, or PCI Express standards.

Note: There are two sizes of ExpressCard module. One is 34 mm wide (ExpressCard/34) and the other is 54 mm (ExpressCard/54). Both modules are 75 mm long and 5mm high. The 34 mm module has the advantage of working in the slot designed for the 54 mm wide modules but not vice versa.

Note: PCMCIA cards do not fit into ExpressCard slots.

The slot on this notebook accepts one Type 54 ExpressCard. You do not need to restart your notebook when changing most cards because your notebook supports hot-swapping. Hot-swapping means that you can insert an ExpressCard while your notebook is running. If your ExpressCard does not work after hot-swapping, see the ExpressCard manufacturer's documentation for further information.

Note: Some notebooks ship with a slot protector in the ExpressCard slot. To protect the open slot, replace this protector when the ExpressCard is not in use.

To insert an ExpressCard:

  1. Push the card firmly into the ExpressCard slot, label-side up, until the outer edge of the card is flush with the side of your notebook.

To remove an ExpressCard:

  1. On the taskbar, click the Safely Remove Hardware icon Remove Hardware icon. Click to select the ExpressCard name, and then click Stop or turn off the notebook.

Note: If the remove hardware icon does not appear on the taskbar, click the show hidden icons button Show Hidden Icons.

  2. Pull the ExpressCard out of the notebook.
