Q: In Windows 2000, what does the message "Out of Frequency" mean, and how can I fix it?

A: In Microsoft® Windows® 2000, when the incoming horizontal sync is counted by the monitor micro, if it is found to be either low or high compared to the specified operating range of the monitor's horizontal phase lock loop, the message "Out of Frequency" is displayed.

If changing the setting in Windows does not resolve the message, perform the following steps to adjust the registry settings for resolution and refresh rate.

  1. Start the computer in Safe mode.

  2. From the Start menu, click Run.

  3. In the Run dialog box, type: regedit, and then click OK.

  4. In the Registry Editor dialog box, double-click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, Config, 0001, and then Display, Settings.

  5. In the right pane, double-click RefreshRate.

  6. Change the value data to 60, and then click OK.

  7. Double-click Resolution.

  8. Change the value data to 640,480, and then click OK.

  9. Restart the computer in Normal mode.
