Q: How do I disable V.92 and V.90?

A: Use the following steps to disable V.92 and V.90. These steps force the modem into V.34 mode in the event that the modem is negotiating a faster connection speed than the line noise allows.

  1. From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. In Control Panel, double-click the Modems icon.

  3. In the Modems Properties dialog box, click Modem, and then click Properties.

  4. In the Modem Properties dialog box, on the Connection tab, click Advanced.

  5. In the Advanced Settings Properties dialog box, in the Extra Settings area, type: ATS50.4=0S51=31. Click OK.

  6. In the Modem Properties dialog box, click OK.

  7. In the Modem Properties dialog box, click Close.

America Online (AOL) uses its own initialization string for the modem. In order to disable V.92 and V.90 in AOL, use the following steps.

  1. Open AOL 7.0.

  2. In the AOL Sign On window, click Setup.

  3. In the AOL Setup window, click Expert Setup.

  4. In the Connection Setup window, click the Devices (modems, etc.) tab, and then click Modem: Modem on COMX.

  5. In the AOL Setup dialog box, click Edit Commands.

  6. In the Advanced Modem Commands dialog box, click in the Setup Modem String text box, and then press the END key on the keyboard.

  7. At the end of the Setup Modem String text box, replace the trailing ^M with S50.4=0S51=31^M. Click OK.

  8. In the AOL Setup dialog box, click OK.

  9. In the Connection Setup window, click Close.
