Zip cartridges consist of flexible media contained within a durable plastic case. The disk media use a substrate coated with high-energy metal particles and are pre-formatted at the factory with servo positioning information, sector and track identifications, and four prewritten tracks, called Z-tracks. Raw media defects occurring within sector and track boundaries are flagged when the disks are pre-formatted and alternate locations are assigned.

Cartridges are guaranteed for three years through Gateway.
