Q: How do I enable Autorun for my CD/DVD drive in Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows 98 SE?

A: The following steps provide instructions for removing and reinstalling Auto Insert Notification.

  1. From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. In Control Panel, double-click the System icon.

    In the System Properties dialog box, click the Device Manager tab, and then double-click CD-ROM.

  3. Select the CD-ROM drive listed, and then click Properties.

  4. In the CD-ROM properties dialog box, click the Settings tab, and then click to clear the Auto Insert Notification check box. Click OK. Close all open windows

  5. From the Start menu, click Shut Down. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, select Restart the computer, and then click Yes.

  6. After restarting, from the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  7. In Control Panel, double-click the System icon.

    In the System Properties dialog box, click the Device Manager tab, and then double-click CD-ROM.

  8. Select the CD-ROM drive listed, and then click Properties.

  9. In the CD-ROM properties dialog box, click the Settings tab, and then select the Auto Insert Notification check box. Cick OK. Close all open windows

  10. From the Start menu, click Shut Down. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, select Restart the computer, and then click Yes.

  11. After restarting, CDs autorun if they have this capability.
