Gateway 42-Inch Plasma Television      Show Part Numbers

Q: Will the codes that work with the Gateway universal remote control work with my third-party universal remote control?

A: There is no definite answer to this question because Gateway® does not control the codes stored in third-party universal remote controls. If a code that works with the Gateway universal remote control is listed in a third-party universal remote control's database and it is associated correctly then it is possible to use that code. However, if the universal remote control does not include the code, you need to use the third-party universal remote control's learning capabilities, if available. Another concern with third-party universal remote controls is that the codes may not always be exactly right. They may be close, but if the third-party universal remote control does not communicate correctly with the component, problems may occur between the remote control and the component.

Following are listed the advantages and disadvantages to using a third-party universal remote control.

Advantages

  • The ability to control all electronics from a single universal remote control.
  • Some third-party universal remote controls have the ability to "learn" the functions of the original remote control.

Disadvantages

  • Not all of your electronic equipment may be listed in the third-party universal remote control's database of codes. In this case you can: utilize the remote control's learning capabilities (if available), update the remote control, or buy a newer remote control. (Before buying a newer remote control, contact the vendor of your current remote control to determine if updates are available).
  • Learning remote controls are sometimes difficult to program. Carefully follow the instructions in the vendor-supplied user manual to correctly program the third-party universal remote control.
  • The learning function of a third-party universal remote control has to be performed for each additional function from the original remote control that you wish to control.
  • The third-party universal remote control may not have all of the buttons needed to control each of the features of the original remote control.
  • Universal remote controls with learning functions become obsolete as fast as those with no learning capabilities.
