My hard drive is low on disk space.

  1. Delete temp files.

    1. From the Start menu, click My Computer.

    2. In the My Computer window, double-click System (C:), Documents and Settings, and then double-click your User Name.

    3. From the Tools menu, click Folder Options.

    4. In the Folder Options dialog box, click the View tab.

    5. On the View tab, under Hidden files and folders, select Show hidden files and folders.

    6. Click OK.

    7. Double-click Local Settings, and then double-click Temp.

    8. Press CTRL+A to select all Temp files, and then press the DELETE key.

    9. Click OK.

    Note: If there are multiple User Names, repeat the procedure for each user name.

  2. Remove unused programs.

    1. Open Control Panel.

    2. In Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs.

    3. In the Add or Remove Programs window, use the up and down arrows to select the programs to remove.

      Note: Selected programs display the Last Used On date on the left side of the window, which can help determine which programs to remove.

    4. Click the filename if the program you wish to remove, and then click Change/Remove.

    5. Follow all screen prompts.

    6. Use the up and down arrows to select the next program to remove.

    7. Repeat as needed.

    8. Close the Add or Remove Programs window when you are finished removing unused programs.

    9. Shut down Windows and restart the computer.

  3. Delete unused files and folders.

  4. Empty the Recycle Bin.

  5. Resize the Recycle Bin.

    1. On the desktop, right-click the Recycle Bin icon. From the menu, select Properties.

    2. In the Recycle Bin Properties dialog box, on the Global tab, click and drag the slider to the left until the maximum size of the Recycle Bin is set to 2 percent.

    3. Click OK.

  6. Resize the System Restore area.

    1. Open Control Panel.

    2. In Control Panel, open Performance and Maintenance.

    3. In the System Properties dialog box, click the System Restore tab.

    4. On the System Restore tab, click and drag the slider to the left until the maximum size of disk space usage is set to 3 percent.

    5. Click OK.

  7. Run Disk Defragmenter.

    1. From the Start menu, point to All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.

    2. In the Disk Defragmenter window, select the drive to be defragmented.

    3. Click Defragment.

    4. When complete, close the Disk Defragmenter window.
