Windows Vista - My Internet connection is slow.
Note: Some of the following procedures may require the use of an account with administrative privileges. You may need to click Continue or type in an administrative username and password during those procedures.
Note: Dial-up connections are much slower than broadband connections. These steps cannot speed up an inherently slow connection.
- Delete cookie files.
- From the Start menu, click Internet Explorer.
- On the toolbar, click Tools, and then click Delete Browsing History.
- In the Delete Browsing History dialog box, click Delete Cookies.
- In the Delete Cookies dialog box, click Yes.
- Clear History files.
- From the Start menu, click Internet Explorer.
- On the toolbar, click Tools, and then click Delete Browsing History.
- In the Delete Browsing History dialog box, click Delete History.
- In the Internet Options dialog box, click Yes.
- Delete Temporary Internet files.
- From the Start menu, click Internet Explorer.
- On the toolbar, click Tools, and then click Delete Browsing History.
- In the Delete Browsing History dialog box, click Delete Files.
- In the Delete Files dialog box, click Yes.
Note: You may complete all of the above steps, plus delete form data and Internet passwords, by clicking the Delete all button in the Delete Browsing History dialog box.
- Reset Internet Explorer to the default settings.
- In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
- Click the Advanced tab, and then click Reset.
- Click Reset, and then click Close.
- Click OK twice, and then close Internet Explorer.
- Re-open Internet Explorer, and then try to browse the Internet.
- Run an anti-virus scan. Refer to the help file or documentation for the specific anti-virus application for completing a scan of the computer and to the Detecting and Identifying Viruses checklist.
- Run an anti-Spyware scan. Refer to the Detecting and Identifying Spyware checklist for more information.
- If using a dial-up connection, open Device Manager and update modem drivers.
